ann curry is with us tonight from baghdad. ann, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. vice president biden is marking the final weeks of the eight-year u.s. war in iraq. he's saying the obama administration is fulfilling a promise to the american people. he e reaffirmed the final withdrawal will happen before december 31. and after meeting with iraq's prime minister malaki today he said the u.s. is about to begin a new chapter launching a civilian mission to help iraq rebuild but it's unlikely that u.s. troops will ever return here. we were able to grab a few minutes with the vice president today. he became passionate when asked whether americans have a moral obligation to thousands of iraq war veterans now returning home. >> if you want somebody who knows how to handle pressure, billions of dollars worth of equipment, who knows how to operate under fire, hire a veteran. we have an obligation. they fought over here. they have gone through these god awful sands and deserts in the middle of a war. they are in god-forsaken places in afghanistan. they shouldn't have to com

dominique d-natali is streaming live for us from baghdad. what is the latest on that?ha, you know what is happening in iran today, the storming of the british embassy, that is of great concern to the u.s. military here. iran has been playing out its soft and hard power in iraq, *erbgs pebgted to be the dominant military power in the region once the united state forces leave in matter of weeks. here are contingency sites. we are surrounded by the world's second largest shear community, many of those individuals influenced by iran. the base here coming under fire on a fairly frequent basis from militia in the area we had a warning a couple hours ago. no casualties for soldiers in this area for quite a few months, but ultimately as the force leaves they head for the and come down heading toward kuwait they are having to protect u.s. forces to be sure they don't come under further attacks. as a result of what is happening in tehran there will be a further sense of caution here in case the iranians use any of their proxys to hurt u.s. troops, as they threatened to do. still

us by phone from iraq. this is an important time. a real inflexion point in our policy in iraq. >> reporter: good afternoon. the c-17 carrying vice president joe biden landed in darkness in bad baghdads you point out, with security concerns are especially heightened here. the vice president team seems especially mindful of the recent rise in violence in iraq as u.s. troops are withdrawing. numerous bombings in recent weeks, including recent days here in baghdad which military leaders attribute to terrorist groups giving false impression that americans are fleeing under fire. at the moment from the 170,000 troops in iraq at the height of the war, there are now less than 15,000 that remain. the final withdrawal is to end before december 31st. it's being described as the largest movement of military equipment since world war ii. the vice president, as you intimated, plans to meet with troops and leaders in iraq's government. trying to address how the u.s. will now help iraq rebuild. the real question is how warmly will america receive these men and women in uniform who have proven resilience, leadership skills to be our next greatest generation? i think it should be asked, beyond our g

baghdad, also in mexico and central america. she has been afghanistan, egypt, and peru, and margie joins us from georgia. welcome to the conversation. caller: my question is, if we wanted them to get osama bin laden turned over, and it took us two years to get him, how did we expect them to give him over? and after pakistan possible pipeline going to china, that is going to take as two more years. and that is what we are protecting over there, that they keep up blowing up, because they want us out. guest: certainly the regional security and the political climate is a complex one. the history of american involvement along in afghanistan and pakistan has been rocky over the past 30 years. on osama bin laden, as you know he was discovered in pakistan in may. he was killed in a u.s. raid there. certainly the u.s. government is asking hard questions about which pakastani officials may have known what at what level. that is something there we have not heard the in. i think that the obama administration is saying that it is committed to a long-term diplomatic security economic relationship with these countries

from iraq as anything but a win for iran. when ambassador departied baghdad in 2009, he warned the events for which the iraq war will be remembered by us and the world have not yet happened. unfortunately, the events of the past two years, culminating in the administration's failure to secure presence of u.s. forces in iraq, have greatly and unnecessarily increased the odds that the war in iraq may be remembered not as the emerging success it appeared when the administration took office, but as something tragically short of that. considering all that our troops sacrificed in iraq, and considering our enduring national secure interests in iraq's stability, we have a solemn responsibility to stay committed to iraq's success. but as we do, we cannot avoid the fact that iraq's progress is now at greater risk than at any time since the dark days before the surge, and that it did not have to be this way. i thank you, mr. chairman. >> thank you very much, senator mccain. secretary panetta. >> thank you, mr. chairman. senator mccain, distinguished members of the committee. thank you, as always, for your continuing support for our men and women
