use a tanning bed. and anyone from 15 to 17 would have to have a parental permission to use a tanning bed. that was not enough in california. now starting in january you have to be 18to use one. that's the strictest in the country. the democrat from torrence, ted lieu, applauded governor brown's decision calling skin cancer the leading cause of death for women between 25 and 29. he also cited a study that showed higher rates of melanoma among girls and young women in areas of higher income. >> because of the way the disease works, you won't know you got skin cancer after you walk out of one of these tanning sessions sometimes until years later and that's why it's so dangerous. >> reporter: the industry has always maintained there's no solid evidence that directly links tanning bed use to skin cancer. on the business side of things, the indoor tanning association says up to 10% of customers are under 18 years old and that of course would hurt the bottom line for salons like this one here in willow glen. some 30 states already have age restrictions on tanning bed use and now states like ohio, rhode island, new york and illin
