host: joining us from new york city is acrid lighter -- zachary mider, a reporter from bloomberg, hereiscuss his latest piece looking at the influence of hedge funds on washington. thank you for joining us today. let's start with the basics. what are hedge funds? fund is a kind of pool of capital that mostly wealthy individuals and institutions like pension funds for insurance companies can invest in. they are likely regulated -- lightly regulated so they can make bets that are more speculative than a traditional mutual fund. hedge funds have exploded in size in the last couple of decades. they are a big part of what wall street does. host: what made you look into the topic of hedge funds for this magazine piece? guest: what we focused on was funds that are so big and can make such a bets on specific stocks or bonds, they have begun lobbying not about regulation of the hedge fund industry but lobbying to help specific bets pay off. for instance, you might buy some bonds that are very cheap right now and push for policies that would make those bonds more valuable in washington. host: ta

canal opened up easier transportation in the new york area, it became -- it still doesn't seem fast to us. it would take at least two days to get from new york city to niagra falls, but that was instead of a week. so greatly easy. greatly easier to get there and you get this big influx of tourists coming from new york and boston and sort of the urban cities wanting to go and visit niagara. it's this beautiful place, they go and have their photograph taken. i couldn't find a date for this picture, but it's clearly sort of the late 1800s at some point, but one of the problems of niagara, here's the tourists alongside the beautiful falls having their photograph taken with a big view camera. one of the problems at niagara falls, though, was there weren't any public controls the way we understand them now. again, people just didn't have that cultural conception of government stepping in to control space in any way. and so what happened was you'd get all of these little sort of tourist stands like we get in a lot of places today. hey, we're going to sell postcards. pay me a dollar or five cents and stand here and get the best view. there would be photo

news continues. for others check back with us a bit later for the morning news. and cbs this morning. from the broadcast center in new york cityight news." i'm tony dokoupil. the accused gunman in the deadly school shooting in florida made his first appearance inside a courtroom. 19-year-old nikolas cruz, former student accused of killing 17 people at a south florida high school. as cruz sat in court more victims from the massacre were being laid to rest. bourke brk manuel bojorquez begins our coverage. >> nikolas cruz avoided eye contact during the hearing, silently staring down. it was his second time in court since last wednesday's shooting. more missed warning signs have emerged. newly released documents reveal in september, 2016, an investigator with florida's department of children and families visited the cruz household. after allegations of medical neglect. investigator noted cruz had depression, adhd, autism that he cut his arms in a snap chat post. that he plans to go out and buy a gun. dcf closed the investigation six weeks later saying the agency found no evidence of mistreatment. >> this wasn't the person that we
