philadelphia. the pope promising those responsible will be held accountable. brian joins us live from philadelphia with more. >> reporter: well, here in philadelphia in 2011 the archdiocese suspended 21 priests suspected of sexual abuse after a grand jury found that the a h archdiocese had covered up the abuses. today pope francis meeting with five victims, adults who suffered sexual abuse as children at the hands of catholic priests. this is what we're hearing about the meeting. the 30-minute meeting took place before he spoke to 300 bishops at the world meeting of families today at 9:00 a.m. we're told the pope listened to the victims' stories and prayed with them. pope francis telling them he felt their pain and suffering in a speech to the bishops after he called the victims, quote, true heralds of mercy. he said these acts which caused pain and violated trust can no longer be a secret and he promised to do something about it. >> translator: and i commit to a careful oversight to ensure that youth are protected and that all responsible will be held accountable. >> reporter: the po

alan fisher joining us live from philadelphia. alan, because the victims support groups, one of them called snap, i think, saying this is just a publicblicity exercise, unimpressed largely with what the pope has to say. so in concrete terms, what is going to happen? >> first of all, of course, they have the issues it's been 13 years since the dam really broke on the allegations of widespread sexual abuse in the catholic church. the catholic church really hasn't addressed the issue to the satisfaction of many of those who are impacted by that. they believe that if the pope is serious, if he wants to do something about it, then it has to be taken away from the catholic church. no oversight in any investigation. they can't be involved. it has to go to private investigators to the authorities to look through the documents that the church is prepared for years and years to pinpoint knows who were suspected of being responsible to see what evidence, to talk to the people who make complaints and then for the courts to decide if there is

philadelphia. authorities predict a million will attend the biggest public gathering f gathering. for many, the most important words he spoke were to the bishops. >> alan fisher joining us live from philadelphia. one wonders what these people who have suffered want the pope to do, alan because this is from one of the support groups saying: is a child anywhere on earth safer now that the pope from maybe 7th or 8th or 9th time has briefly chatted with abuse victims? it hasn't gone do that well? has it? >> reporter: no. it isn't going to stop predtors from abusing children on any level. what they believe is the exposure to sunlight all of the records the church have kept from the 1930 did, 40s,'s , all the way up to the present day. they turn them over to the authorities so they can find out exactly how many cases of child abuse have they dealt with? how many have been reported? heard the victims? what action was taken? is there anyone who can still face action? could they hand it over to the authorities to take cases to court? then they believe that will things may change, but as i said in my report, there is a concern that the church is protecting itself, that it is taking actions
