special report" on a night of almost unimaginable sorrow for parents and others in newtown, connecticut, 65 miles from us here in new york. police say a gunman dressed in black body armor came in to the sandy hook elementary school this morning and started opening fire. when it was over, 27 were dead at the school. six adults, and 20 children. along with the gunmen. police say one other doesn't was killed elsewhere. believed to be the shooter's mother. an emotional president obama spoke this afternoon about the shootings. chief white house correspondent ed henry has that part of the story. >> the majority of those who died today were children. beautiful little kids between the ages of five and ten years old. >> president obama struggling to keep his composure, the grief of an entire nation visible in the tears he tried and failed to suppress. >> they had their entire lives ahead of them. birthdays, graduations, weddings. >> earlier the president spoke to connecticut governor dan malloy, as well as f.b.i. director robert mueller who is coordinating the investigation with state authorities. >> i offer governor

used in the new town, connecticut, massacre, particularly the semiautomatic assault-type rifle that was reportedly used in most of the killings. so how unusual is this weapon? how easy is it to get one heree united states? our pentagon correspondent chris lawrence has been looking into these questions for us. chris, tell us what you can about this extremely deadly weapon. >> first of all, wolf, they're everywhere. i mean, you can literally buy this rifle at nearly 2,000 walmart stores all across the country. there are literally millions of these rifles in homes across america. and surprisingly enough, after what happened in connecticut, that number may be going up. not down. the ar-15 has always been a top seller at this virginia gun shop. but chuck says since friday's shooting, sales have been surging. >> people want to get them before the government imposes any restriction and they're buying them up in record numbers right now. >> reporter: we weren't in the store for five minutes before customers started calling for guns and ammo. >> those magazines are selling fast. in anticipation of the possible ban on magazines. >> reporter: he can't keep enough of the ar-15. >> we do have in stoc

us tonight. >> well, hi, chris. we are here in the knnewtown ar of connecticut miles from sandy hook, connecticut, where the tragic shooting took place today. right now, hundreds of resident s are gathering at a nearby catholic church for a vigil to for those lives of young people who were shot today. they are holding a prayer vigil to comfort the families who were told that they had lost their loved ones in this town. it is a small new england town in area, and very rural area in the central part of connecticut here. the school certainly k-4 as we mentioned, we don't have identifycations tor age-- of th schoolchildren or the names being released, but we are told that the investigators are processing the scene now and trying to deal with the identification of the children and as governor maloy says back le turn them back to their families to grieve their loss at this time. this community certainly just now getting out of the sadness and shock part of this grief heavily starting to set in. what we don't know about the shooter at this time is his exact identification, and they are trying to process that information as well.
