relief agency in gaza is saying 50,000 people have fled their homes. we are going live now for us in gaza city. it is simple to read out the numbers but not giving a face of the suffering there. is there a way to gauge how the people are fairing? >> when you speak to them, they'll tell you, they are terrified. the shelling is picking up again and it is a psychological thing that they are living in fear and they don't know where to go and they are saying we have nowhere to go. they have tried to stay family but they are not feeling safe. people are extremely worried. we visited one of the villages and the areas on the border on this front line, if you will, and that gives a sense of how they are feeling. death succumbs the air here. you hear the sound of a drone. this is a border town and no one is feeling safe. >> every house has hundreds of people fleeing their homes, no food, no water and we can't go any where. no one is taking care of us. i hope what happens to us it is going to happen to all of the ar ar arab countries. >> we were met with people running away. there is panic here. we are b

is live with us in gaza city. they're talking about a really hard military strike. what is the situation like so far? >> reporter: they are, indeed. this is the leaflet that has been air dropped on people in the area. and it tells them that the israeli army will conduct a powerful operation in the area. they will target rocket launchers who israelis say have been hiding around homes and hospital ohs. it gives them a specific route to take out of town. and tells them this is all effective as of noon sunday. that was several hours ago today. the israeli military last night did have one incursion with special forces across the border overnight. they say to take on rocket launchers and four israeli troops were hurt in that. that is one thing they're hoping to avoid by evacuating the areas so they will intensify the airstrikes after these people and will be able to say afterward we warned everyone to get out of the area. so those strikes are likely to include significant airstrikes. we don't know if they could inincluded a crowd incursion as well in a larger sense, but t

in israel. yesterday's attack on a u.n. school being used as a refugee center in gaza city sparked violent protests over on the west bank. and as as the palestinian death toll in gaza topped 800 today, secretary of state john kerry continued diplomatic efforts to reach a cease-fire. nbc's richard engel has more from gaza city. >> reporter: clashes and protests broke out overnight in the west bank. thousands of palestinians tried to march to jerusalem. several were killed. it's these pictures that are fueling the outrage. an attack thursday on a u.n.-run school in gaza, used as a shelter. at least 16 were killed, 200 injured. a local hospital was overwhelmed. many of the wounded, very young. the israeli military offered differing explanations of what happened over its active twitter account. hamas fired from a populated area near the shelter and prevented civilians from evacuating, after we sent warnings. the u.n. chief responsible for the school said there was no warning. >> we're mil were militants operating inside the school? >> no, we're very, very strict. >> reporter: the israeli military tweeted that maybe the schoo

to tell us about the latest damage in gaza city, and it was hit hard with shellingwhat is the damage. do you have an update on the civilian death toll? >> yes. one of the last targets hit in the early hours of the morning before the day broke was the support area behind me, our cameraman will zoom in so you can look at the damage there. that is a large building that the fishermen use to store their nets, some of the fishing items. it's an office as well. you can see how hard it was hit. three missiles came in. it rocked the coast line, the shore of gaza, where a lot of the hotels are based. and i guess one of the questions is, you know, it will be difficult for all the people in gaza to build without construction materials. the only construction materials in are for approved united nations projects. it makes it difficult for people to do reconstruction work. as for the death toll the ministry of health is reporting more than 30 people were killed. people all over the gaza strip. rafah in the south, kahn uniies. magaz. >> and others. all had a lot of civilian casualt

in gaza keeps climbing. palestinian paramedics say four children were killed at a refugee camp in northern gaza. ben wedeman's in gaza city for us. these four kids who died, what do we know about this, ben? >> well, it wasn't just -- this isn't coming just from palestinian medical sources, this is from our colleagues, journalists who were there, who saw this happen. what happened was these boys, all from an extended family called the buckert family, were playing in the area of the port when incoming rounds from an israeli vessel off shore slammed into the area. four of them were killed. all of them between the ages of 8 and 11. now, cnn has been trying to get reaction or some sort of explanation from the israeli military. until now, no answer. although some israeli media are reporting that the target was something -- some sort of naval facility about 100 meters away from there. but of course these four boys, they come from the shati refugee camp, just up the coast from where they were killed. i spoke to several relatives. they had just gone out to play. one relative, their uncle, saying they had gone to play football. and of cou
