matt bradley joins us live from iraq. and matt, the long awaited battle is under way. >> reporter: the problem here is that so far this operation has been limited to just the kurdish fighters and the american troops. as you noted, they have announced this several hours ago. now, the kurdish role in this is also very tense. the kurds have so far moved into part of the city and retaken several village said that are populated mostly by religious and ethnic minorities, but the kurds are not going to be allowed to penetrate into mosul proper. this highlights a lot of the problems surrounding this operation. this is a delicately choreographed dance. iraqi military and u.s. military forces are very confident that mosul will eventually fall. the important thing here is how to retake mosul. it's balancing all o different ethnic and minority grouped that make up the country and make it so hard to govern. that's why in the coming weeks we'll see a lot of different interplay between the shiite groups, the sunni fighters coming in fro

cnn international correspondent darwa damon is joining us live from iraq. darwa, what are you learning about how these forces are pushing into iraq. >> reporter: good morning to both of you. now, that push to the north, that's actually the closest that the iraqi security forces have gotten to the city of mosul itself. and then you do have these advances on multiple different fronts. in some instances, they're able to push forward faster than others, but the closer, broadly speaking, that these various different groups have gotten to the city of mosul itself, the tougher, as expected, the fight is becoming. not just in terms of the ongoing clashes that exist, but isis, repeatedly using those suicide car bombers, not just launching them at troops as they're advancing, but in some instances, hiding them in these towns, and they be deploying them once troops are busy setting up their defensive positions. and you also have this isis counterattack, that happened in the city of kirkuk. a city that, relatively speaking, has been fairly quiet, away from the bulk of t

he joins us live from iraq. ben, help us understand how strong a grasp do the iraqi military believe they have on mosul once they get in there in terms of the isis militants who may still be lingering there? >> well, it's going to be quite a challenge, christi, because mosul is a see that under normal circumstances had a population of about 2 million. now it's somewhere between 700,000 and 1 million. but it is a large city. it's iraq's second largest. and it's one in which isis has, we understand from sources inside the city, prepared some significant defenses. yesterday we learned that isis had released many of the prisoners in its jails. people who were jailed for things like smoking cigarettes, shaving, and wearing the wrong clothing, they have been put into the job of digging trenches and tunnels around the city in anticipation for this coming offensive, which we do believe could be happening any moment now. we understand that the nerves of some of the isis fighters are starting to fray, that some of them ha

richard engle joins us live from erbil, iraq. are reports that isis has launched a new attack on an iraqi town. what can you tell us about that? >> well, isis is trying a variety of different strategies. they have fighters who are d a senior iraqi official said that there are probably 5,000 fighters in the city, among them, 1,500 foreign fighters. they also have been spreading out, some of the militants in the towns and villages around the city of mosul itself. that's one front. and they're planning to defend it and already are defending it. then there is the terrorist attacks that isis has been launching, particularly we saw one just a few days ago in tactic, and then today, in central iraq, an area that had largely been not pacified, but an area where isis had been cleared out already, we see the militants going on the offensive there as well. so it seems that isis is trying to deflect attention away from mosul by launching these terrorist attacks outside of its area of comfort and reigniting old war zones. >> richard engle live

he's joining us live from iraq.is there any indication that iraqi fighters have a good gauge of how many isis fighters or militants may still be holed up in mosul and ready to fight them in. >> reporter: it's not clear at this point, christi, but what we understand from diplomats in baghdad is they think there's somewhere between 3,000 and 4,500 isis fighters in mosul. what we do know from speaking to people inside mosul is it appears many of the isis fighters, especially the foreigners, are being moved. moved perhaps to syria for a final last stand. we understand there are some foreign fighters left. we're told basically pakistanis and chechens. but certainly it does appear that mosul is bracing for this imminent offensive which will involve tens of thousands of members of the iraqi armed forces, paramilitary groups, as well as kurdish fighters, and there are somewhere around 5,000 u.s. military personnel also on the ground and will be providing support. in addition to the u.s.-led coalition which has been striking

matt bradley joins us now live from iraq with the latest. matt. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. the offensive has picked up once again on the eastern side of mosul. this time by the counterterrorism forces. the elite u.s. trained unit. they're trying to push past some of the christian villages and towns they have already liberated into mosul, and word we're getting now is they're actually getting quite close to the city itself. if this fighting on the eastern side, this iraqi security forces, are the hammer for mosul, then the shiite militias you mentioned are the an vill. they're trying to block the isis elements within the city from retreating west into syria from where they came just two years ago when they swept into northern iraq and took over all that territory. but these shiite forces are problematic. they have been implicated in the past in crimes against civilian populations in this area and the rest of iraq. while they may be seen as central to the fight against islamic state and have been in previous battles, they're very problematic and a lot of the dis

for using every single diplomatic tool at our disposal to try and end this war. >> joining us live from erbil, iraqoreign correspondent matt bradley. in addition to the syrian news, there are reports that iraqi special forces are encountering increased resistance just outside of mosul. >> reporter: that's right, louis. this assessment from the defense secretary, this is a typically sanguine statement from a u.s. official when it comes to action on the ground here in iraq. he's right to say this is going according to plan. so far iraqi security forces have managed to move around a siege mentality and a siege strategy around mosul, the second largest city in iraq. they've managed to take almost a hundred cities and towns all around mosul. but we have to put this into perspective here. most of these cities and towns are void of people. they have no civilians. and when the iraqi security forces, the peshmerga, and the regular army, when they actually try to pierce isis' defenses and move into mosul, that's going to be an entirely different story. there's still over a million civilians in that city. jus

. >>> and joining us live from erbil, iraq, matt bradley. good day to you.news surrounding raqqah. >> reporter: that's right. secretary of state -- secretary of defense, excuse me, ash carter, said they are planning on moving in on raqqah. that is a very, very ambitious plan for what could be an extremely bruising fight. if isis seems to be putting up a suicide standoff in mosul, which is very near to us, it's going to be literally a last stand for raqqah. now, basically ash carter is saying this is going according to plan, that's why he's turning his attention to raqqah, raqqah being the capital of the self declared capital of the islamic state, but let me pour cold water on that for a moment, if you will. the iraqis and americans have said they've taken about 70 to 90 towns and villages on the outskirts of mosul. that's not representative of the kind of fight the iraqi security forces are going to be seeing as they move closer and closer into mosul. remember, mosul has 1.2 million civilians and most of the towns and villages on the outskirts have almost no

nbc's foreign correspondent matt bradley is joining us live from irbil, iraq. refugee camp this week. >> reporter: that's right, alex. we went out for the internationally displaced people two days ago. this is a camp that grew to 33,000 in a couple months. this means 33,000 stories of tragedy and families torn apart by war. take a look. two weeks into the battle for mosul and iraqi troops have yet to pierce isis defenses. just miles away from the front lines, a make shift city is springing to life. as the fighting goes on, desperate families arrive at this camp each day by the hundreds. the camp is teeming with more than 33,000 people, and most of them aren't from mosul itself, once that city falls, aide workers are expecting a massive wave that will overwhelm their already limited resources. up to a million people could be displaced in the battle for mosul. assad just fled south of mosul. land mines destroyed two of the three cars in his convoy. he came here in july. his large family sleeping in this small tent. i asked him, how many members of his family have

joining us live from erbil, iraq, matt bradley. good day to you.but it does feel like progress is being made. >> reporter: that's right, alex. progress was made yesterday. today we're entering the familiar holding pattern, the kind of pattern that tends to develop in fallujah and ramadi, a lot of these recent battles. the iraqi style of attack, especially for a city as large as mosul, which you mentioned is the second largest in iraq, is really kind of medieval. they're encircling the city and the defenses have been built. isis has been occupying mosul for the past two years which means they've created defensive berms around the city. they have a network of defensive tunnel works. they have ieds placed all around the area. we're rear moving into a time where this is going to roach a pause where the battle is going to just reach an encirclement and we're going to have to wait until the iraqi officials can decide who is going to penetrate is isis' outer barriers and move into the center of the city. right now this is just extending the agony of the 1

joining us now live from irbil, iraq, matt bradley. reports that isis has launched a new attack on the iraqi town of rutbah. what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: thanks, betty. the rutbah attack is meant to distract the front line fighting in mosul and drag some of the major forces away from that massive fight that's coming right upon the second largest city in iraq. this is classic islamic state diversionary tactics. they did this in kirkuk, which is about an hour and a half south of where i'm standing right now here in irbil and others. you can describe them as kind of almost medieval crazy attacks. they set fire to a sulfur factory, have done things also in the valley, signals the islamic state is coming under pressure and they are lashing out erratically in order to distract and use new and novel methods to really kind of push back against the iraqi security forces, whose forces are all coming around mosul just in the last week. but the front line fighting has really kind of slowed down since the battle started last monday

from isis control. matt bradley is in iraq for us and he joins us live from the city of erbil.'s the latest on the ground there? >> reporter: good morning. the situation in kirkuk right now is quite fluid. what we do know is about 20 isis militants flooded into the city. they managed to take over several security positions, mostly police stations and former police stations and they attacked a construction site for a power plant that was being built by iranian construction workers. why attack a construction site? isis does consider iran to be one of their primary enemies in the region because it's considered the center of shiite influence in the region. right now, that situation is still unfolding. the iraqi special forces specially trained by the u.s. have gone into kirkuk and are now trying to arrest the situation and take them down. one building is still occupied by the isis militants carrying small arms, suicide vests and grenades. as you know, this is very typical isis behave. . they're trying to create a diversion from the attack in mosul. they have kind of succeeded. they

he joins us live now from erbil, iraq. >> hi, carol.me very disturbing reports of a dramatic increase in the number of brutal executions going on at the hands of isis. sowing terror into the local population. u.n. reporting 232 people have been murdered by isis, executed in recent days. just around mosul. and we have word earlier this day that 20 men have been killed inside mosul by electrocution. they were tied together, and all electrocuted. this happening at mosul university. their bodies were then left out in the open as a message to the rest of the population. now, we're also hearing word that tense of thousands of people are being rounded up from the villages near mosul. just on the outskirts of mosul. and as you said, being brought in to the city to join what 1 million, 1.5 million other civilians in the city, all being held as human shields. this obviously is going to make the retaking of mosul extremely complicated for iraqi forces when they do eventually enter the city. also, word that isis is taking down all of the local iraq

. >> i want to bring in the united nations humanitarian coordinator for iraq joins us live from baghdadat's being done right now to help these civilians trapped in mosul right now? >> we're very worried in the worst case scenario as many as a million civilians may be forced to flee the city in search of safety. so what we're doing is trying to prepare emergency camps and emergency sites to receive those people and make sure that they receive the assistance that they need and deserve. we have six camps established at present. that could take up to 60,000 people and we are rushing against the clock in order to establish more than 20 new emergency sites. if there's a worst case scenario we're going to need all the space available. >> are you working under the assumption that these isis terrorists in mosul will fight to the death and simply start blowing up buildings, oil fields, killing civilians, car bombs? or will they -- you can only hope, when they see the overwhelming force they're dealing with, give up, raise they're hands with a white flag? what's the assumption you're working under

live from iraq. cnn's michael holmes is on the ground following developments near mosul. michael, it is good to have you with us this hour. let's start with the very latest from the frontlines. what more can you tell us about the peshmerga push into mosul? >> reporter: there have been movement on a number of fronts around mosul. to the southeast, the predominantly christian town, there's an offensive under way there. to the north of mosul, a town that's being attacked by peshmerga fighters as well. that's only ten kilometers outside of mosul. that would be the closest that any forces have gotten to that city. we're not far from a town that has been subject of an assault that began in the early hours of this morning, around 6:30 a.m. local peshmerga forces moving in on multiple fronts to try to take that town. we were watching it being pounded by artillery and rocket fire and air strikes as well. a couple of huge bombs landing on that town. sort of softening up. this is all part of trying to encircle mosul. that's been the plan all along. eventually into the city itself. which still could be some time away, geor

from the terror group. let's get now to matt bradley joining us live on the ground in irbil, iraq. good day to you.his very sad development about this u.s. officer there, there are reports coming in that isis militants have attacked government buildings now in the city of kirkuk. >> reporter: that's right, alex. we're starting to hear that this is on ongoing operation. it started about 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. this morning, something like 20 militants from isis charged into kirkuk, which is about an hour south of here and raided several security buildings. we understand that the kurdish peshmerga and counterterrorism unit, the elite unit tried by the u.s. are going in and contained the situation, but at least one of the buildings is still being held by islamic state militants. most of the fighters were killed. again, that's 20 militants all armed with small arms, grenades, and suicide vests. this is typical islamic state. they tend to have diversion their tactics when they are facing pressure on another front, and this time it's mosul. this has diverted the elite security forces from the fight in mosul to
