i am joined by the former national transportation safety board investigator. thank you for joining usjust beginning its investigation. how long you think it will be before we can know for sure just what happened here? >> one correction, they have already began their investigation within hours after the accident. they just have not worked on seeing. they have been in the control tower gathering radar tapes and information from all of the areas around the accident. they just have not had access to the accident site yet. when they get to the accident site and the airplane comes out of the water and the victims have been recovered, they will go in there and look for physical evidence. they will check out the airplane and the helicopter, looking at all the systems that they can. they have the data recorder and the voice recorder. they will be checking. one of the questions you just raised moments ago is the altitude of the helicopter. i am sure they will pull the altimeter system out of the helicopter, testing instruments, and examine it for the system. to make sure that they may be still

joining us now, cnn aviation analyst and former managing director of the national transportation safety boardpeter goelz. peter, to start with, i think what was striking about the video, we were just showing these thick black plumes of smoke is the video we had gotten prior to that showed singeing, but it didn't look like it had been kind of a catastrophic fire situation to the naked eye. that appears not to be the case when you look at this smoke. what does that tell you? >> well, it's it really is reflective that it appears as though both of the wings of this aircraft were torn off upon impact. and when you tear off your wings, those. that's where the primary fuel cells for the aircraft, the fuel tanks are located. and that this, uh. normally not particularly flammable jet fuel, if it's aerated, it becomes terribly explosive and flammable. and i think that it shows that these wings, as they were torn off, it aerated the jet fuel. and you had a flash fire that was very dangerous. >> have you seen something like this before? like, is there an explanation for this, that somebody with your expe

us more. >> major new details here. jake, from this very revealing briefing from the national transportation safety board, the first time it has held a briefing since the week of that january 29th mid-air collision, also, the first time we have gotten a readout of the details from the flight data and voice recorder, the black box on board that blackhawk helicopter, the key new findings here from the ntsb. it now believes that the crew of that black hawk helicopter was wearing night vision goggles, which is key because that may have actually limited their view in the moments leading up to this crash. also, the ntsb is still trying to account for a discrepancy captured by the voice recorder when it comes to altitude. the pilot on board that helicopter said the altitude was 300ft. at the same time, the voice recorder captured the instructor pilot sitting next to her, saying the altitude was at 400ft. one thing is clear here. according to the ntsb, the radio altimeter on board that helicopter said the altitude at the time of the crash was 278ft. that's a piece of equipment that bounces a radio beam from the aircraft to the
