i'm san francisco mayor london breed and it has been a very, very challenging year for all of us in san francisco, but i've got to tell you, we're coming alive again. we're starting to open the city again. i see you urban alkamine. thank you for all the work you do to keep us safe out here. we are here today because we are taking an additional step further to get the city re-opened. i'm joined by a number of our city department heads including our city administrator car men chiu and our librarian michael lambert. and, let me tell you, michael has not only been running this library, he and so many of our librarians and the people who work for the library here in san francisco, they more than almost any other department have been working as disaster service workers to help address this pandemic. they've been down at covid command at mascone center showing up every day doing whatever it takes. organization. going out to our hotels where we are helping to support our homeless residents. going out to the community hubs to help support our kids. preparing virtual lesson plans and reading time

a looks a little different when it's used in san francisco in all caps for decades, for our street signslast eight or nine years, it's been used in mixed case in san francisco, which was a controversial decision among design people, but was i think a requirement of some of the federal funding that the city got. >> interesting. what about the apple san francisco font? a few years ago, they came out with one called san francisco, but i think it got mixed reviews, right? >> well, it is pretty good. i don't think it's designed, i think for them, that's no modest to their corporate and cultural home, more than an attempt to reflect the city. it's actually apples second font named san francisco. the older one is from the 1980s designed by a wonderful demographer named susan. it is very fun and funky. i think that would actually does kind of reflect the city. my fog city gothic i hope harkens back a little bit earlier to sort of the midcentury, the midcentury gothic i guess, you know, or of the city. i think black and white films, i wasn't around then, but invokes something for me. >> why are f

us? >> san francisco says 80% by mid-may. >> they are confident this can be enough vaccine to do that. the pace is pretty remarkable, 360,000 people have been vaccinated they are at 47% but they are vaccinating about 10,000 people per day, they think they are going to go up to 20,000 people per day as the vaccine supply increases you can do the math in your head and how quickly you can go through the rest of the city. backlog now but yes you double the vaccine supply in another couple of weeks. it's a lot either easy to go for all those people. >>> santa clara county is sounding the alarm about virus mutations. >> right now we are in a race between the variance on the vaccine. keep wearing your mask, delay your travel, don't indoor dine, don't go to indoor bars, don't host an indoor gathering at rome . even if it's allowed under the state worlds don't do it, it's not safe, not yet. >> all four of the most concerning variance are circulating in the county. as of march 27 there were 92 confirmed cases of the uk variant and three confirmed cases of the south african variant and one bristl

three gray whales have been found dead in and around san francisco bay in just the past week. ktvu azenith smith tells us that marine biologists are very concerned about what's going on. she was away in scenic san francisco bay. a sad discovery the carcass of a 33 ft male gray whale. this video taken by eric jones on wednesday. these creatures they're just such magnificent creatures and just to see them dead like this is really heartbreaking. jones's nonprofit see valor help told the whale to angel island. this whale joins a 41 ft adult great female discovered a week ago near chrissy field. the necropsy done by the marine mammal center on the adult fee. male and conclusive. whatever killed her did so suddenly, so it's a suspicious death. we don't know exactly what it was. yeah over the weekend, a third wheel female, not fully adult found outside the base south of san francisco. currently it fitzgerald marine reserve this year we've had. these two animals, and there was another one on the weekends or three animals in the san francisco area in a very short space of time, so we are concerned what killed the

san francisco? >> i am hopeful that with everything we are trying to do that it does not happen here in san francisco. so, our usee policies have changed considerably. for example, when obama was president, he put out 272 recommendations to the department of justice. and we have been implementing many of those recommendations, including changes to our use of force policies. so that the kinds of things that have occurred in that particular situation can't happen here. and our goal is to make sure that we do everything to prevent that with the changes in our policies, but also making sure that we have officers who work in our department who are not, who are taking that training and also taking their life experiences and the things that they need to do to do a good job for the people of san francisco, and using those things to serve and protect, which prevents harm against residents of our city. >> look, your city is one of the most diverse in the country. if not the world. what would you say to people at this time, at the conclusion of this very emotional trial? >> i would say it is, it was an emotional trial, but
