us. cnn law enforcement analyst and former secret service agent jonathan wackrow is with us. we're going to dig into a lot of different things right now, john. first, just what's the latest on the las vegas investigation? >> well, the las vegas investigation is taking an interesting turn as they get deeper into the profile of the individual who rented the vehicle. now, let's go full stop here for a second. they believe they know who rented the vehicle, but they are not 100% certain that that is the person who is in the vehicle. because that body, because it's badly burned, has not been identified. but the renter, like the new orleans suspect, is military background, but not former military. he's active duty military with 19 years plus of service, and he's part of special forces command. he is highly trained in communications, electronic measures for bomb detection, intelligence operations. he would be one of the most sophisticated in terms of training people in the green beret. >> okay, just so we're talking about these two different things, the similarities are both rental e

us. you are a former secret service agent.hat does it say to you and members of the secret service community that these are the first pallbearers chosen for this long commemoration of jimmy carter's life? >> well, first of all, you know, i appreciate the family, including these agents. you know, these are agents who served the former president and are really standing the ceremonial watch over the casket and engagement with, you know, transporting the former president to his final resting place. it really symbolizes a lifelong duty to protect, um, former president carter is the longest protectee the secret service has had. he has had protection for nearly 50 years. so this is really important for the secret service as an agency to really respect the former president. our longest protectee and say that final goodbye and being a part of this is really important to those agents that we are seeing on the screen. they served the former president in a protective capacity. uh, you know, during various phases of, of protection. um, but

joining us now, former secret service agent cheryl tyler.attacker had an opening here with these barriers being down. how big of a misstep was this for law enforcement? >> good morning. i can only say that i know they feel horrible this morning, yesterday morning after this occurred. this was a big misstep. unfortunately, i listened to the reports of the commander and the mayor and everyone else, counsel people and the governor and so forth. when you have a malfunction of a piece of equipment that is imperatively needed, it's important it is needed for all of the major events that take place in new orleans you should have probably worked something out with the company. maybe they did, maybe they didn't, to get something there to replace it during these big, big events they have. >> last month we know five people were killed, hundreds injured in a car ramming attack at a german christmas market. there's been other attacks in recent years in new york, north carolina, texas. how difficult is it to stop attackers using vehicles as weapons when t

back with us now, former fbi assistant director frank figliuzzi, retired fbi special agent rob d'amico and retired secret serviceng about the fact that this could happen. frank, are you surprised that a car was able to go some eight to ten blocks down bourbon street on a night like this? >> i think -- i'm not surprised that we have had this horrible event. what does kind of cause me to wonder is the length to which the car or truck was able to travel. how many people died or were injured along that lengthy course. now, i realize the speed might have been extremely fast, but police officers have to make a split-second decision here. am i -- is this an errant car? is there someone having a medical condition? ones they realize, no, this is not an accident, this is deliberate, it's often too late. and the suspect comes out of the car and engages the officers. so, people might be thinking, why weren't police shooting at this car? well, it's crowded. it's elbow-to-elbow crowded near bourbon street and the french quarter so split-second decisions, have i acquired my target? what's behind my target? is it worth shooting

secret service is rolling out a new look. for decades, the uniformed division, which primarily protects the federal buildings, has used these white vehicles. but on monday, when president trump rolls down pennsylvania avenue for his inauguration, those uniformed officers will now be in these black and gold cars. the secret service says the goal is to make all of their vehicles similar to the president's protective fleet of black suvs. the former uss john f kennedy has set sail on its final voyage this morning. it departed from philadelphia and is headed to brownsville, texas, where it will be taken apart. the navy commissioned the last conventionally powered vessel in 1968. it was used for 18 deployments in the mediterranean, including operations in the middle east. after the september 11th attack, the u.s. used the vessel for air security in the atlantic ocean. the uss john f kennedy was retired in 2007. jessica aguirre joins us now with what's coming up next right now at six. we're following breaking news in the east bay. multiple reports tonight that oakland mayor, who was recalled, has now been indicted six months after her h
