to you. thanks so much for joining us. >> arson investigators will soon be on the scene of a former kntv building trying to get a better idea of where the fire started and how. bob has been at the scene all morning. bob, you just spoke with the fire department. what do they think happened? >> reporter: they don't know yet. good morning to you, peggy. they don't know yet what caused our old newsroom and studio at 645 park avenue to burn down. but they're thinking as of right now, is that the person, man, was probably involved, because whether or not it was accidental or intentional, they don't know. but they believe a man was involved because there were people inside at the time. and this building was not hooked up to pg&e. these were homeless people who had moved in over the years, with belongings with things like barbecue grills and propane tanks and motorcycles. they also had torn down a lot of walls inside creating a lot of space in what the fire department said was a very hazardous situation for the people who lived there. >> came running down the stairs to call 911. i thought she was joking. i'm not calling 911. you're crazy. she said, the buil

one woman we talked to said some people had been living at the building for many years using camping stoves and propane tanks to cook. she doesn't think that's what startedthe fire. we're told parts of the building had been converted into apartment units. >> one of the girls who lives upstairs came running down screaming fire, fire and at first we thought she was crying wolf and we saw the smoke an everybody panicked. we all just tried to make sure everybody was out and we tried to get all of the dogs out. >> now, that woman told us she believes everyone did make it out safely yesterday. but firefighters say they just can't be sure because when they arrived here at the scene, the roof and the walls of this building had where collapsed. so it was just too dangerous for crews to go inside and search for victims at that time. they will again have to do that at some point in the near future. two firefighters suffered minor injuries. they are expected to recover. investigators working to pinpoint exactly what started this fire yesterday. there are some reports that it was started intentionally but all of that is still being sorted out. we're live this morning

to do a complete sweep of the building. we actually just had to move back, firefighters just asked us to move back to make room for an engine coming through. now, this five-alarm fire started at about 3:00 this afternoon, it grew from there. mutual aid needed to be called in almost immediately. there is very heavy smoke making it very hard to breathe and there are ashes falling. neighbors are concerned the wind might spark other fires. we are told there are a lot of abandoned homes in the area. firefighters say they are watching, should any embers spark other fires, they are prepared to deal with that. there are dozens out here watching this fire. firefighters keep asking as i mentioned people to move back. they just asked us to move back to allow for a truck to come through here. a five-alarm fire on montgomery and park in san jose. you can see there's still a lot of heavy smoke. it all appears white so they are getting the upper hand on this fire. the winds continue to shift so i cannot emphasize enough the need to stay inside your home if you have asthma or any breathing problems or young children. make sure those windows are shut. >> thanks very much, kimberly. damian
