wisconsin and vegas. all very key to winning the election. you have romney in florida today in tampa just the last hour. tell us about the tone that both of these men have to strike. the president tomorrow and the kind of tone that we are hearing from mitt romney today. >> you know, i think when big things happen in the country, the tone -- the sense that the presidential campaign seems to get a little smaller, suzanne, because this has been a very negative, very nasty, very small campaign, if you ask me, while the issues could not be larger. the state of the economy being one of them, and then when you have a natural disaster on top of the serious issues that we ought to be discussing about the future of the country. i think what you are probably going to see is a tone change. now, i would also say to you that at the end of a campaign is usually a time when you do see a shift in tone because people start making their closing arguments, and you don't ever want to end a presidential campaign on a negative, nasty note. you are going to be running negative ads, sure, but the candidate himself will try and move to

us from all 11 states and gray are too close to call. of these battleground states, look at wisconsin appear. wisconsin is one of them. in 2008, the president had no problem winningsixteen points over senator mccain. but what you are seeing over the next couple of days, joe biden has scheduled two events in wisconsin for today alone. earlier today, the white house announced that president obama will be in wisconsin this coming week. in fact, early next week. if that schedule holds, you have to ask your questions. if you follow the candidates, where are they going and why? wisconsin was in play before paul ryan was on the under card of the vp vp vp nominee, before scott walker, republican governor, was the only governor in the history of the country to win a recall vote. these 10 electoral votes, as you gain in the system and try to map and figure out who is going to win where -- late in the night on november 6, wisconsin could play date in the 10 electoral votes. martha, back to you. martha: very interesting. bill: also, we are keeping an eye on the storm. it could be the most dangerous than 25 years. two storms are about to come together as a super storm. deadly

wisconsin will play ohio state in a football game. i want you to tell the people of ohio who is going to win that game. >> they spoiled us last year. we spoiled them the year before, and janna and i were at that game, it really depends on who has the better record is going to lose because that's what happens. >> who is going to win? tell the people of ohio. >> it depends on who has the better record. it always depends on who has the better record. it's -- it's in madison this year, home field advantage works well, but if we're doing better, they will beat us and if they have a better record they will beat them. that's how it always goes between the badgers and the buckeyes. how is that for an answer? >> that's a terrible answer. that's okay. i'm out of time. you're lucky on that one. congressman ryan, thanks for your time this morning. >> thanks, man. >> who new the toughest question would be about sports. let's get the morning's other top stories from natalie. >>> good morning, everyone. a deadly shooting at one of the busiest border crossings between the united states and canada has investigators searching for a motive. officials

some sort of new hail marys when using minnesota and michigan and pennsylvania because they will not win a state like ohio or they're not going to win a state like wisconsin i think both theories have a little bit of merit. republicans have a tendency, have had a tendency over the last couple cycles to go to states to try to expand the map a little late. i remember dick cheney visiting hawaii in the days before the 2004 presidential contest. both cheney visited new jersey, george w. bush visited california into 2000, the waning days before 2000 trying to put to very democratic states somewhere and play. so this is some kind of combination between a head fake torch try to get the obama campaign to spend money somewhere where they wouldn't otherwise, or it's sort of a real move towards expanding the map. the interesting thing about this year by the way is that this is the first time since 2004 that we've had a normal election. remember, 2006 was a democratic way. 2008 was a democratic way. 2010 was republican way so we don't really know what a norman electorate looks like. we don't know sort of the racial makeup or the age make a. this is why you're seeing

us. we can hold ohio, the polls are still better there than other states. if we can hold wisconsin and there's traditionally democratic state and we can either get nevada or iowa, we wine against the clock now. can they hold on to these things before romney overtakes them? >> david, i wanted to ask you, take us back to the white house and the dynamic between the first bush/kerry debate and the second. was there any lesson there? >> well, i think there was a recognition they lost that first debate. there was recovery, but i don't think that was bush's shining moment. i think that 2004 turned on the issue of terrorism, particularly that bin laden tape, and i think the perception that the chief problem that the country faced that was another attack and the ongoing threat from terrorists was something that more or less the administration had solved. again the perception, i'm not saying what the reality was, but that was the political perception and punctuated by that bin laden tape. one other comment about going to sam's point. there is certainly a recognition, i think, both campaigns that the obama team can grind this out, demographically. and in certain states, but i ta
