day the world looked on in horror as the twin towered lay mortally wounded. it was also the day osama bin laden became a household name and al-qaeda a household word. as most mourned bin laden was planes hijacked on september 11th was bound for sfo. it crashed in a pennsylvania field. over the years we have come to know many of the family members of the people on the flight and we just spoke to one man who lost his pregnant wife on flight 93. >> reporter: i'm here at lauren's place, dedicated to the member of lauren. she was a resident here at the time of the attack. she was on that plane that went down in a pennsylvania field, that is when passengers decided to fight the hijackers and prevent the plane from slamming in to another building. lauren's husband said news of bin laden's death is bitter sweet. >> it was a shock, you know, i kind of expected this day to come earlier. then almost gave up hope it would come at all. i'm not for violence but i do want to thank those who were vigilante on behalf of lawyer ken our unborn child and all those who were lost that day and everybody lost to a terrorist act. it's not just ours, it's worldwide, we need to stop it. >> reporter: he said that he is not at all celebrating the death of bin laden but he said it's another chapter closed but he isn't celebrating and what makes it worse, his wife was carrying their first child. >> . >> i was just thinking about that. that child would have been almost nine. thank you. >>> joe joins us now. thank you for being here. >> pleasure. >> for a long time we have known that bin laden was not handling the daily operations of al-qaeda . how big a deal is this? >> first let's -- we talk about al-qaeda as if it's one big organization and some of the groups that we are facing in places like iraq aren't necessarily al-qaeda but are franchises or extensions so different groupsn. that sense the daily operations aren't necessarily what bin laden was in charge of but i daresay it's likely that many of the other functions have been delegated. his number two by the way, is -- more than likely the person who has been calling more of the shots and will be the focus for american forces and international police forces to go after. i'm sure he is probably in pakistan. in bin laden was there he is probably too. >> we talked act the second in command. bin laden had almost mythical like qualities. do you think we will see a leader like that? >> you know, i don't know that the second is that kind of person. i will say some of the qualities about osama bin laden made him mythical and for frightening to an american audience, we would get the videos, some of those qualities was the fact that he seemed very calm, he didn't look or sound crazy when he spoke, he would pop up, he was -- we have played some of the videos tonight and the other -- of him speaking calmly into the microphone and much of that was not the sort of i shoot it with my camera phone. they were designed to send a message to us and the east. the bit on the horse back was timed to involve a muslim holiday that involved the horse that mohammed went to heaven on. he was making a comparison between himself and mohammed. he knew how to talk and very calm when he spoke and for an american audience it made him for of a bogieman than if he had been screaming at us and foaming at the mouth. >> he seemed to enjoy the cat and mouse game. >> we talked about president bush. they had a very interesting relationship. he -- in 2008 bin laden released a video where he talked about why he attacked on 9/11 and he did nothing but assault the character of president bush. the strange thing was he needed bush as a recruiting tool for al-qaeda in the same way bush made use of the where on terror and been bin laden to get reelected. i don't want to say they need each other but they fed off each other. he has been a part of our reality for the last ten years now through two administrations and if you go back to clinton really three. his passing is not insignificant. it doesn't mean that al-qaeda is finished. >> we have been showing as you have been speaking these live pictures, people out there, they are celebrating but they are out together -- acknowledging that this significant day has come. washington dc, ground zero, how is this playing do you think across the world? >> i think that any time people see us chanting usa, usa they are -- in other countries there will be a lot who will groan and say the united states thinks that it's to much of itself. i think in this particular instance the united states gets a pass on this. people understand that this is a little bit of an eye for an eye, getting our pound of flesh for 9/11 forgive the expression. in this instance it's not likely to be the negative reaction. the more interesting thing, goes back to the previous interview we just had that -- with the individual who lost his wife. anyone who lost a loved one when they watch a murder trial and someone is convicted knows when that person goes to the gas chamber you never get your family member back. we can chant but those three thousand are still lost
