." ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ leland: well, the usaa poppy wall of honor is on the national mall this memorial day weekendheir lives for our freedom. we toured it with senior vice president of military affairs, retired navy vice admiral john byrd. >> each poppy of the more than 645,000 represents a man or woman killed in service to our country since world war i. the poppy is the symbol of remembrance. it started in world war i when lieutenant colonel john mcrae saw his comrade being buried and was moved by the red poppies moved among the white crosses. he penned a poem, an american picked up on that. she wrote a corresponding poem, "we shall keep the faith," and then she lobbied with the american legion to make the poppy the symbol of remembrance, which it is today. it's only a few inches deep, and they are quite packed in there. running down here is a series of panels starting with how the poppy came to be the symbol of remembrance and then showing how americans have died in each conflict since world war i through the present. and, by the way, it hasn't ended. we're still adding numbers from the global w
