i'm news director for utah public radio at utah state wrun versety. i have been asked by the utah debate commission to moderate this evenings debate. we're live on the campus of utah state university in logan broadcasting from the performance hall where we're holding the debate between candidates in utah's race for governor. tonight we'll hear from the incumbent republican governor and his democratic challenger. now before we began each candidate will receive a 90 second opportunity for a statement and prior to it and will be the first to give his 90 seconds -- i'm sorry, governor herbert will be giving the first statement. >> we'll begin with you governor herbert. >> and one of the great universities in utah and appreciate and thanks for the debate commission and thank you mike for being here today. i think we're all aggies and i think we're looking forward to having some aggie ice cream when this is all over. it's great to be with you. let me just rehearse. when i came into office 7 years ago we had very difficult times where the depths of the great

and so, what happens here in utah is not likely -- >> stays in utah? >> what's that? >> it stays in utah? >> well, for now, it does. but we're building a new conservative movement, because we think that's what's required. you know, mike pence said the voters should come home to donald trump, which i think is ridiculous. because conservative voters are -- can never be at home with donald trump. donald trump has invited vladimir putin into influence our elections and undermine our elections and our democratic institutions. he's attacked people for their race and religion and their gender. this is not what real conservatives stand for. and it's not what principled conservatives in the mountain west and in utah stand for. so there's no going home to donald trump for true conservatives. >> what other state do you have a decent chance in winning? you've got a good shot in utah. we've looked at the numbers there, those electoral votes. where else can you win besides utah? >> our best chances are in the mountain west -- >> name the other state besides utah you can win? >> ida

it starts with winning his home state of utah. and those six electoral votes. and by doing that he needs to block both hillary clinton and donald trump from getting 270 electoral votes and winning the the house of representatives where the republican majority would have to pick a mcmullin over donald trump. >> reporter: back in the carmack mullen reflects on it all. >> two months ago i had 130 twitter followers. then you have people stepping up and engaging online and otherwise to support this campaign. it's humbling. >> i'm evan mcmullin and i'm running for president. >> reporter: mcmullin is campaigning hard in idaho and even taking aim at wyoming. his slogan the right thing. >> reporter: in most ways, evan mcmullin is a staunch classic republican conservative. >> we must abide by and honor the constitution which protects and secures the god-given rights of all americans. >> reporter: he opposes obamacare, prefers tax cuts to tax hikes. he's a national security hawk and a pro-life candidate who would appoint supreme court justices to overturn roe versus wade.

and with that job he was able to put himself through the university of utah. i know you students here at salt lake community college aren't able to do that. you are taking on heavy student loans. i am running because we need to keep college affordable and every other pathway that people follow to get into the kind of living wage jobs, the kind of jobs they can race their family on, it is critical to hang on to those pathways. that is college, job training, making sure everybody thrown out of work in middle age gets an opportunity to get back into a living wage job. that is why i am running, to fight for you, and i appreciate the chance to be here. >> mr. owens. and now a 90-second opportunity for representative mia love. >> thank you to all the students that are here today, and thank you to all of those watching there home today. i know it's easy to take in the doom and gloom of the daily news, but i want you to know that i have confidence in our nation. i have been able to work with the fourth district, and i have worked with extraordinary people, people like

are you at any level surprised that a republican ticket is worried enough about maintaining utah? that they are sending number two on the ticket? >> well i was headed west anyway tomorrow. we've got a great momentum in nevada and in colorado. we're excited about that. the opportunity to stop in to utah and to rally our support in that state is a great opportunity for us. and it might well be my last trip west of the mississippi, brian, so i wanted to take the opportunity to rally the faithful. actually stop in, raise a few dollars at campaign fund-raiser. and we're looking very much forward to it. but look, we're just going to leave no stone unturned in this election. >> what do you consider your firewall? >> well, you know, that's a really good question. i think our firewall is the american people. the american people know we can be stronger. and they know we can stand tall on the world stage again. they know this economy can do better than the 1% rate of growth in last quarter. they know we can have health care system not based on a government takeover of health care like the fa

are you worried about utah?> we want to make sure that evan mcmullen, it is running as an independent candidate, does not win utah. i think the never-trumpers, who put him in that position, just wanted to choke off the trump-pence path to 273 in utah, which has traditionally been a very red state. if you get a candidate that shares a lot in the state with people who are in the state, you anybody can win with 32% to 35% of the vote. he has a friend in senator lee. he recently drafted the education reform senate. he is on his way to colorado and nevada as well and stopping in utah. but i take nothing for granted. that is my job. my job as well as not to chase every promising statewide poll and go deploy our best resources there, meaning governor pence and mr. trump. we are trying to do a tighter electoral map that republican candidates have done in the past. i looked into the obama 2008 method as a partial model. some of the states that president obama and his team, it looked like they were foregone, but they star
