. >> thanks very much, and, uva. the committee to protect journalists, we do research on the conditions. i am the coordinator of the americas program. i am tasked with overseeing the violations on the island, and we have recently launched a report in the fall that looks into this phenomenon of the blogosphere and the huge obstacles they face while doing their jobs. i am going to start by making a short introduction of the conditions in cuba. as you may know, the cuban constitution grants the communist party the right to control the press. it recognizes press freedom only in accordance to the goals of the socialist society. the state owns and controls all media outlets. cuba's closed system does not allow any kind of independent reporting and is a very highly repressive and, in fact, cuba, according to a research group, ranks among the top jailers of journalists. a recent report on journalists around the world found cuba the third largest jailer of journalists in the world after china and iran. there are currently 22

let uva make a comment, and then we will -- >> i want to add two things. . >> i think i have more than 100 emails of family, friends, colleagues and there is an interchange of them permission, of texas, of photos, or some trivial happy birthday or happy mother's day. there are more interesting content, but it has helped unite families inside and abroad. that is something we'll take for granted. -- we all take for granted. the other thing is youtube. in the last year, alone, i can think of about four or five important postings on the internet of things happening in cuba. there were drinking street guys and there was hundred in cuba and it went worldwide. recently, just a couple of weeks ago, students decided to participate and complain about the quality of their food. it was a lengthy complaint of how can you go to school with the food they were given to rid -- were given. someone is out there filming and putting it on youtube in some way. i think that also shows the use. in this strong complaint, you can see other people taking pictures with phones. there was more than one person takin

it's always a pleasure to go to uva to see all these insights he's applied.laughter] >> lee is absolutely correct about the long-term partisan nature of congress but it is the case, i think, it has gotten worse since the 1970s according to the best measures if you look at the distribution of ideology, 20 or 30 years ago there was a lot of overlap. we had democrats who were more conservative than a lot of republicans and we had liberal republicans. since about 1980, that overlap has all but disappeared. indeed, the senate it doesn't exist anymore. the most conservative democrats ben nelson of nebraska is more liberal than the most liberal of the senators. in the house i think there's one individual, one democrat who is more conservative than the most liberal republican. i assume he eats alone and is a pretty lonely guy. so the task really before us is how to deal with these really daunting structural deficits within that kind of a political context. now, frances makes the point that we have research that shows that in the past, landmark legislation almost alwa

and then went to uva for grad school and then kind of migrated to washington. i had never been to d.c. before in my life. before i came here to work. well, came here trying to find work. ended up as an intern in survey research at the republican national committee. while i was working the phones at the rnc, i worked the phones 40 hours a week. and then worked 20 hours -- no, the internship 40 hours a week and worked the phones 20 hours a week. raising money for the republican national committee in 1974 or so, which was immediately after watergate. it was a little tough. and then my internship and my intern coordinator was a guy named karl rove. so it was an interesting experience. i then decided you know what? i wanted to go work on a congressional campaign. and i finished my grad school stuff and then went through a seven-day, 18 hour a day campaign manage program. they teach you everything you need to know about running a campaign and the anything i'd done at duke was i handed out buttons for george mcgovern. i was a college kid in the '70s. everybody was a d
