was the head of the legal forum, in 1951, third year law student, [inaudible] to come speak at the uva, noted civil rights activist, political scientist, just a remarkable human being, and he said he would come but only if it wasn't segregated. back then the public meeting had to be segregated. he thought that was ridiculous. he was aware of the court decisions in naacp and higher education, so he pushed, and he talked with students, faculty, ultimately the president of uva, and they agreed to the non-segregated meeting. as far as i can tell, it is the first meeting of that kind, public, non-segregated meeting on the campus. that wasn't an epiphany. he went on. his first daughter was born. he was a young married couple. but by the time he got to 19 -- and the 50's are interesting. i wrote about that in my book, what's happening in the african american struggle, around parks, malcolm x, baldwin, so things are heating up. people are moving at a parallel. 1960 the campaign is a pivot point because [inaudible] -- also ignites youth activism. 1960 when john kennedy ran, by that time, the bl

just over the place of confederate statues in america, and since we're talking and hosted here by a uva institution, i think it's relevant to remind people that was just a few years ago, right? we saw those violent clashes in charlottesville over the removal of a confederate statue, so i'm curious to hear from both of you. what what is the place for a confederate statue in american society today? well, let me be clear when i help build the nationals you have african-american history and culture was because i felt that race needed to be center in the place where the world comes understand what it means to be an american the national mall. but it also means that this was an opportunity to say here are ways that is john franklin used to say that this history needs to be corrected. and i would argue that removing commiterate statues are not erasing history at all. in fact, it's helping us find a true or more accurate history. i would argue that there are some statues that ought to be preserved in museums because they help us understand this moment. we're in but i am a big believer that if y

revising history, and you see it just over the debasing of confederate statues, and because we are here in uvad that was a couple of years ago and the violent clashes in charlottesville over the removal of a statue, and so what is the place of a confederate statue today? >> let me be clear that when i built the african-american center, i wanted the american people what it meant to be an african-american in the center of the national mall, but i wanted people to know that this is the ways in which american history needs to be corrected. and removing confederate statues is not racist at all, but helping us to be finding a better history, and removing them is helping us to understand this moment that we are in, but if you are in search of accuracy, the confederate statues will help you to understand history a little bit, but removing them does not change the historical narrative, but it corrects them. >> yeah, what he said, and if you go back to means test of when that statue was built, it was not the 1880s or 1890s, and so it was not reconstruction, and the collapse was the tragedy, because in t

we are being hosted by a uva institution. just a few years ago we saw the violent clashes in charlottesville over the removal of a confederate statue. i am curious to hear from both of you. what's the place for a confederate statue in american society today? >> let me be clear. when i helped build the national museum of african american history and culture, it was because i felt race needed to be centered in the place where the world comes to understand what it means to be an american. it also means this was an opportunity to say here are ways that this history needs to be corrected. i would argue that removing confederate statues is not erasing history at all. helping us find a truer, more accurate history. i would argue there are some statues that ought to be preserved in museums, because they help us understand the moment we are in, but i am a big believer that if you are in search of accuracy, confederate statues help you understand history a bit, but removing them does not change or challenge our historical narrative. co

>> pick one with spf of at least 30 it should be broad spectrum uva and uvb and it should water resistant chemical sun screen, which will absorb the sun's rays, but it will prevent the absorption into the skin. so want to go with a high number. >> doc, does it matter if you're, like, at the pool, or on a boat near water versus hiking, land versus water is there a difference what you should wear? >> absolutely. when you're near water, you want to use a product that is water-resistant, and you want to use a high number and use a lot of it, because the product doesn't stay on your skin, even though it's water-resistant it will sweat off, come off if you're in the water. good spf, water-resistance and apply frequently use at least an ounce of sunscreen, about the size of a shot glass, in order to protect your whole, entire body. so it's super important to make sure that you're using the right product when you are in the water. when you're walking around the city and doing errands or doing, know, a quick in and out of your car, use a moisturizer with an spf. you can use a makeup that contains
