down in a bloody pillow. now, defense attorneys say that former uva lacrosse player george humely never meant to harm yeardley love that he just went into her room to talk over problems that the couple had been having and that the two got into an altercation and she was killed by accident. of course, in closing arguments over the weekend in that rare saturday court session, we also heard sharply contradictory versions of how yeardley love died. the prosecution has argued all along that she died of blunt force trauma to the brain. the defense attorneys told the jury and their medical experts told the jury that yeardley love actually died of a type of asphyxia, that she was intoxicated and that when she was tossed on the bed, she essentially suffocated in her pillow, so jurors to sort out what version they believe the cause of death is. even in closing arguments on saturday though, the prosecution backed away from one of the most serious charges against george huguely and that is a charge of premeditated first-degree murder, however, prosecutor dave chapman did urge jurors to strongly consider another type of f

uva killer, george huguely. the jury just delivered its recommendation. fox 5's paul wagner is live down in charlottesville now with what they had to say. paul. >> reporter: brian, the jury returned just a few minutes ago and returned a sentence for george huguely of 25 years in prison for the second-degree murder charge and one year in prison on the grand larceny charge. they could have given as much as 40 years on the second- degree murder charge. the virginia statute calls for between 5 and 45. they chose 25 years and they could have gone between 1 and 20 years on the grand larceny charge, they just gave him one year. now, this is a recommendation. the judge will take it under advisement and on april 16th, i believe is the date they gave, they will formalize this sentence. there will be a presentence report and then george huguely will be formally sentenced by george edward. he can accept the sentence or he can lower it, but he cannot raise it. now george huguely could have faced 40 years in prison on that second-degree murder charge. the defense then wanted the jury to be polled. the

uva. the whole nation was really gripped by this trial and of course the verdict that came down but the prosecution says even with the verdict, there of course are no winners here. the jury found 24-year-old george huguely killed lacrosse star yeardley love but did not intend to murder her. after the attack in her bedroom, he stole her computer. the case told the very sad story of an abusive and rocky relationship coupled with alcohol abuse. not only did huguely admit to having more than a dozen drinks before he kicked down love's apartment door that fateful night in may but yesterdayly love -- but yeardley love herself was drunk. her blood alcohol level twice the legal limit. >> what we do in court is a rough approximation of justice in any given case. we hope that they feel some solace from the outcome. >> whenever i look at her pictures, it's really sad for me. and also at the same time i think looking at that good looking boy and growing up, good family, losing that child going to the jail, that's really, really sad for their family, too. >> obviously it was a crime of passion. i think justice

the 24-year-old uva lacrosse player was visibly pale in court when the verdict was read. after two weeks of trial and more than 60 witnesses, the jury came down with the second- degree murder charge. huguely's attorneys were hoping for manslaughter claiming his drunken attack against yerdzley love was an -- yeardley love was an accident and not the blows that claimed her life but a jury of course found otherwise. huguely grew up in chevy chase and spent time with his dad in potomac where neighbors reacted to the news. >> we're very sad that this family has gone through this traumatic incident. >> growing up, a good family. losing that child, going to the jail, that's really, really sad for their family, too. >> reporter: also damaging to huguely's case, his own words in letters and an e-mail, one saying he was going to kill yeardley love for allegedly cheating on him. another when he said alcohol was, quote, ruining my life. huguely's friends say they planned an intervention but of course it was too late. he was already arrested in this case. coming up in a half-hour, a statement from love's family in my next live report. back to you. >> than

uva murder trial. the fate of george huguely accused of beating his ex-girlfriend to death is in the hands of the jury right now, the prosecutor break down >> good morning, robin. huguely was charged with first degree murder, now it's up to jurors to decide his fate. they've also been given the option of second degree murder, voluntary manslaughter and involuntarily manslaughter. >> reporter: she never had a chance, those words spoken by the lead prosecutor, breaking down in tears, reminding jurors of the final moments before yeardley love died. she couldn't scream, was it his hand over her mouth? the prosecution suggests that george huguely killed his ex-girlfriend in a drunken rage. this is a case of a woman who went to bed in what should be one of the safest and most secure places. her home, they said. then he began to assault her. he left her for dead. the defense made their own dramatic closing argument. in a surprise twist, calling their own client a stupid drunk and boy athlete but they reiterated he's no cold-blooded killer. but the defense did admitted they was there that night and contributed to her death but had not intended t

down, maybe he won't. we'll follow him to see where he goes next. jon: we're getting some new information on the volatile relationship between a uva lacrosse player, georgeuely, and his late ex-girlfriend, yeardley love. huguely on trial for killing her after an argument in may of 2010. rick folbaum is following the case. rick? >> reporter: jon, even the defense admits that huguely killed yeardley love. this trial is to decide whether the murder was premeditated. both sides agree huguely and love had a rocky relationship. they were known to fight a lot. there was a record of angry e-mails they wrote to each other before love was killed. prosecution says huguely had a history of being violent and point to a e-mail sent days before her death quote, i should have killed you. that is a big part of her case this was and should be first-degree murder. we're getting first images of yeardley love playing lacrosse. some of the pictures are not great quality. this is first time we've seen the former star player in action. there she is. her former roommate said she saw huguely attack love a couple of times. one time he put her in a choke hold. the defense team says

lacrosse player broke down in court today as the jury in his murder trial watched a video statement he gave to police. george huguely is accused of killing his girlfriend and fellow uvant yeardley love in 2010. in the video, huguely can be heard saying that he, quote, shook her a little. love's bruised body was found by her roommate eventually in 2010, and practical ors say huguely kicked down love's door that night, shook her and banged her head against the wall. reporter bruce la vaughn joins us from charlotteville, virginia. tell us what it was like in the courtroom when they played that video. >> i tell you, it was riveting and george huguely was definitely not the only one who was crying. yeardley love's mother, her aunt, other members of her family, they're all in the courtroom here. they're sitting in the front row. the mother was crying here, and when we looked out at the jury, it looked like one of the jurors might have been crying as well, and then, of course, george huguely, he kind of put his head down and appeared to be crying as they played this tape. one of the eternal mysteries about police and suspects is how they get them to come in and confess or n
