v.a. hospital or military facility. on any given night, up to 1,000 families are staying in one of the 76 fisher houses in districts all across this country, and their need is only growing. this effort that's the subject of this amendment will help fisher house build new homes and serve more of our military families. fisher house has served over 335,000 families thus far, and provided $407 million of estimated out-of-pocket savings on lodging and transportation to our military families. looking ahead, they have eight houses already under construction and have identified 25 more locations in need of support in their pipeline. fisher house is a highly rated nonprofit, having received an a-plus rating from charity watch, and awarded the independent charity seal of excellence. most importantly, it's a beloved institution throughout our military and veteran communities. this amendment increases federal support for fisher house from $5 million to $10 million. it has strong bipartisan support, and is a good example of the things we can do if we work together. i urge my colleagues to join us in supporting this program. and now

but all this is at risk if we don't finish what we started with the v.a. mission act. if we do nothing, the money we have appropriated for the veterans choice program will bust the strict budget caps the v.a. is under and that will triggle automatic, indiscriminate cuts across the board. that man asked me for one thing. he said next year on memorial day, he was hoping that they could have a cookout and that i'd come back and have a hot dog with him. when that happens one year from now, mr. speaker that same v.a. hospital may well be under the strict budget cuts. something like a cookout would be seen as an extravagance if you're get 25g%, 30% cuts across the board and we'll be responsible for that, mr. speaker. that's the only thing that man asked for. he has been cared for. we have gotten him the care he deserves. we need to ensure that for the next generation. we can fix that today. we can exempt the new money in the v.a. mission act from the strict budget caps by voting no on ordering the previous question so that my bill, h.r. 5805, can be made in order. thank you
