. >> and v.j. is tracking an even bigger story tonight. doug begins our coverage. hi, guys. >> yeah, hey, guys. we are watching snow coming in across parts of the area starting to become a little more widespread. we have one squall line right now that's making its way through parts of the area. i want to show you the radar. here it is, stormg team 4 radar. notice activity around howard county columbia and i-95. heads up if you're traveling i-95. back to the west hagerstown down toward winchester this is the area that's starting to get under the gun now. i want to focus on the montgomery county area. around gaithersburg, columbia over toward laurel. watch out in this area for snow and rain. back to the west, this band right here, martinsburg to hagerstown, it says it's rain. most of this is all snow. the weather service just put out a statement talking about visibility that could be near zero. so this is an area to watch out for. could produce upwards of a quarter to half an inch of snow very quickly. also seeing snow around bluemont, clark county back toward freder

many of us, most of us earn in you aring this event in feet, not inches and v.j., this will not only have an impact on us over the weekend, but into next week, as well. >> that's right. so many things we'll have to deal with with this storm system as it comes through and 14 to 15 miles per hour and as we clean up the snow, windchills will be in the teens. we remember in 2010 and snowmageddon that lasted for days. the snow intensity friday night especially into early saturday, we're not going to get the moderate snow with reduced visibility and we'll get the heavy snow and visibility that will be down to zero for several hours. blizzard conditions expected friday night through your saturday as well as the wind. again, those winds will be around 40, 60 miles per hour and there will be isolated spots that could see that for a brief period of time and right at maryland's eastern shore and just off the bay in the potomac and the possibility of higher winds with 45 to 50 miles per hour and a lot to deal with. >> starting in 24 hours. the worst of it 24 to 36 hours and getting better, 36 to

v.j., lot of people asking why does veronica have to go outside? she loves it out there, right? >> reporter: i have the gear. the wool, the scarf, gloves, everything to stay warm. we do still see the wind up right now. the winds today have been gusting to 20, 25 miles per hour. coming down in a few locations but you can still see leesburg still gusting at 30. 25 camp springs. around green belt. so, yes, breezy and for early tomorrow morning, we still expect a little bit of wind. just enough to bring down the windchill values right now they're at 13 degrees in d.c., 5 in germantown. 16 what it feels like in fredericksburg. early tomorrow morning, they'll be a little lower. what i like is tomorrow afternoon a lot less wind. and that's the change that you'll notice. when we hit 32 tomorrow, finally freezing and above freezing, i'll take that, but at the bus stop tomorrow morning, you better believe it will once again be cold and of course, doug, you got more on the possibility of a few flurries late tomorrow. >> yeah, that's right. that's from another clipper system. those clipper

v.y v.j., the wind in a situation like this makes a difference. >> reporter: we were buttoned up, scarves, hat on. i lost the hat for right now. i'm still going with the gloves. it is cold, just not quite as windy. our windchills this morning, take a look at them, they were down below zero briefly around 5:004:00, 5:00, 6:00 a.m. the windchills are in the low 30s because we barely have any wind left hanging on. the wind is pretty calm. this evening, a calm wind, settles down to the upper 20s by 8:00, 9:00. as doug mentioned, a cold start before we see those temperatures rebound. doug, of course, you'll have more on that coming up a little later. >> yeah, that's right. we're talking about coming up at 5:25, not just one, but two areas around us that saw snow today. i've got that forecast for you coming up in a minute. >> thank you, doug. >>> the cold weather is hard on a lot of people. d.c.'s hypothermia hotline got more than 400 calls last night after the city activated its cold weather emergency plan for the first time this season. we're told that vans transported more than 500 people to

veronica johnson, v.j., you were outside last hour, how have things changed. >> the snow in this one pocket has slowed down just a bit and those areas that you just showed on the map, bright white where we're seeing the moderate and each heavy snow come into the area and that will allow us overnight to really ramp up as we'll go from this much snow to that much snow. look at the difference between 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. from 2 to 5 inches across the area by 7:00 p.m. and by 11:00 p.m. we're talking about a foot in some locations and two feet of snow overnight while you're sleeping. we get so much because of the snowfall rates and two to three inches per hour and there could be some thundersnow and by late in the day this is 11:00 p.m. tomorrow. over 30 inches in many locations. this is really going to ramp up in a hurry which is why we're saying it's a good reason to clear the snow over every couple of hours so that you're not lifting all that heavy snow all at once. pack snow even three to five inches is five pounds per square foot and the other thing we're seeing out on area road

side and right now we'll go out toward veronica johnson and pat collins has their own snow stick and v.j., do you call that thing? >> it's a 48-inch measuring stick and it's mine. it's metal and i like it and i can take this thing anywhere and nothing ever happens to it. we have an inch on the stick and being on the storm team 4 weather patio and if the camera can go back a little bit and the three feet that we're talking about, that would bring it about to my waist right here and that's what we could be seeing in parts of our area. this much snow, this high up and take that into consideration along with the fact that we're talking about extremely windy conditions, blizzard conditions with winds blowing at 50, maybe 60-mile-per-hour gusts for a time period and that will create incredible drifts across the area. the next change for us and the snow starting to go for more of a dry snow to trying to change over from the wet snow and the next big change for us is that we'll be seeing heavy snow across the area starting from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. and that snow will accumulate quickly and you can

a storm is moving through the region now and doug and v.j. with the very latest. >> we've been talking about the storm moving in and the changes that this storm is bringing in. we're seeing the snow coming in across the area and soon it will be a different type of storm. exactly, the wind is going to pick up and the snowflakes will be bigger and the intensity of the snow will pick up and we've seen the visibility stop and also the wind will be picking up and that wind could be gusting upward of 50 to 60 miles an hour and it is snowing everywhere and already we have numerous inches and upward of five inches in some of the area right now and here is the storm system itself and a big storm system is starting to transition and the energy off the coast and you can start to see it out here and look at the moisture in through north carolina and that's what will be brought right into the area as we move on through the night tonight and i want to take you through skycast 4 and show you when this is going to evolve as well as the heavy snow. we have th

one thing though we're looking at as we look towards veronica johnson who is out on the weather deck, v.j., mother nature playing a pretty good role in helping to get rid of some of the snow. >> i like where temperatures are going to be this week. they're going to be way up. well above freezing. not too high where we would see flooding if there were clogged drains around the area. our temperatures are going to be low. they will be below freezing but not that low for that long. we're going to really see our temperatures rebound rather quickly as we move into the day tomorrow. 28 early tomorrow morning. gaithersburg, leesburg as well.. i spoke to maryland's highway administration, they said if it's above 25, they can just go with the salt. so when you've got the sunshine as we had today, that's always a plus, but even if you've got temperatures that are 40 degrees or higher for three days or longer, you can melt about 2 or 3 inches of snow a day. of course, the other considerations, fog, which we're going to have quite a bit of coming up over the next couple of 24 hours. we're going to give
