vaccine mandates is to get people vaccinated. caroline: i am curious about developing nations, we saw very little data, are there same issues there, or is it a question of not being able to get it from a supply side issue? is there push back from the population? >> it is not as big of a problem like we have seen in the united states. it is more of an issue of having the supply and having the delivery mechanism to get those vaccines to the people who need them. there still is misinformation and disinformation around vaccines that have created some hesitancy. as in the united states some people still view these vaccines as extreme mental and have concerns -- as experimental and have concerns. in the low income countries, it is a problem with access. this is something that covax, led by the world health organization are really working to address. they have run into some challenges. particularly with the student of india which was supposed to be a major supplier for covax, and needing to deal with the situation in india. not able to

>> the two mrna vaccines, the pfizer vaccine and the moderna vaccine, are essentially identical in my mind, and they're probably the best vaccines we have right now in terms of efficacy against the delta variant. the data on johnson & johnson is just much less clear. there is enough data out there in my mind to suggest that the j&j vaccine is still going to do a very, very good job of protecting against severe illness and death. the question is, how good a job is it going to do against preventing breakthrough infection, symptomatic infections? and the short answer is we just don't know, and we'll know more in the upcoming weeks. the thing that i worry about are the chinese vaccines, which have been used maybe about 1/3 to 1/2 of all the vaccines in the world so far have been the vaccines made in china. again, we don't have a lot of data on them, but the data we have suggests that they're far, far less effective against the delta variant. that worries me, because it means a lot of the world that's been vaccinated is actually potentially quite still vulnerable to the delta variant. >>ou

so vaccines are key to this. as i said multiple times here today already, they are key along with people wearing masks indoors. they are not as effective as vaccines, but they are another tool that works to slow the spread of the virus. the other thing that we're doing is mandating vaccines in certain settings, including in health care settings, and i think as people know, the city as a whole, the city is requiring employees across departments to become vaccinated, so there is effort to make the vaccine as available as possible. we will bring the vaccine to you. in your house, if you have five or more people ready to get vaccinated, we can make that happen. and the other thing is now that we've made it as easy for people to get vaccinated, we support efforts for people not getting vaccinated. we support requirements for vaccine. a lot of businesses are requiring to show proof of vaccine status. >> we're seeing a lot of questions in the chat about boosters and booster shots, so i'm just going to combine some of th

by that measure, these vaccines have worked remarkably well, the pfizer vaccine, the moderna vaccine, and the j&j vaccine. if you have any of those vaccines, you should feel good that your chances of dying from covid are much lower than they would have been had he not been vaccinated. what we do see with vaccines from time to time is people can get mild or moderate infections, those are called breakthrough infections. there is a difference between moderate breakthrough infections and the severe breakthrough infections or hospitalizations that we worry most about. that is an important to station to make. we also know with vaccines in general, over time, they start to lose some of their efficacy and protection and that is one of the reasons why we had many vaccines that required more than one does, like the hepatitis b vaccine, which is a three dose series. there are vaccines like tennis which require boosters. so we know that periodically, sometimes you need an extra dose of the vaccine to ensure that it continues to be protective we feel good about the protection against severe hospit
