. >> and i'm vai sikahema. we're certainly concerned about irma. we also want to know what's happening here. let's get right to meteorologist erika martin and the first alert forecast. hi, erika. >> hi, vai, hi, rosemary, good morning. here it is, hurricane irma has just been downgraded to a category 4, so i'm going to go ahead and change in just one moment. here's the update. current sustained wind speeds, 155 miles per hour. so, again, hurricane irma is currently a category 4 and this is what it's forecasted to be as it makes landfall in florida over the weekend. however, this could change. so, of course, if you download the free nbc 10 app, you'll have more updates on that. as we get this into motion, notice one of the bigger, more important issues is that it's not going to encounter any land hases at all. it will continue to feed off of the nice, warm temperatures and continue to work its way up the atlantic basin or through the atlantic basin, up into florida. so right now, we have this making landfall as a category 4, but things can change. so

i'm rosemary connors. >> and i'm vai sikahema. let's get right to meteorologist erika martin. within the last hour, erika told us that irma has been downgraded to a category 4, but we're not dismissing at all the power of this system. >> not at all. because what you have to consider, vai, is that as it makes landfall, it's expected to, in florida, it's not just going to be feeling like it's 155-mile-per-hour wind speeds. it's going to feel like it's a lot stronger. so we have to think about the exponential effect of it actually making landfall. however, what i do want to mention is that it's really interesting, in the atlantic basin and the gulf, we have a combined three hurricanes. jose currently at a category 3, will not affect us, as it's going to stay out to sea. irma, a category 4, and katia, currently, a category 1. so a lot of activity going out on in these waters because sea surface temperatures are very warm, an active time of year in the tropics. current temperatures, mainly in the 50s. we're almost seeing 50s in philade

i'm vai sikahema. irma is a category 5 with sustained winds of 185 miles per hour. it made its first land fall mandatory evacuations are underway in the florida keys. erika martin has the latest. >> the update right now is irma has been able to sustain her strength and fact that it has been organizing very well now. it has been moving westward just below the 20 degree north latitude line. that's where a lot of hurricanes get dismantled. staying west right now is irma. let's show you what to expect in the coming days. it is going to effect puerto rico in the way of storm surge and strong winds at about 8:00 p.m. on wednesday. it continues to work its way west and northwestward. it will continue to get strong and maintain it's strength. it is expected to be in miami on thursday. sustained wind speeds at approximately 155 miles per hour. as it makes land fall we are expecting to have a lot of issues including storm surge, strong winds. so we'll talk more about irma and i'll do a facebook live and update you on local weather. >> thank you. we'll come back to you for upd

. >> and i'm vai sikahema. we'll talk a lot this morning about irma and its path. hat's happening here. let's check in with meteorologist erika martin with our first alert neighborhood forecast. >> vai, we have great weather here. and what's exciting is that we have a very nice stretch of weather locally with temperatures mainly in the 70s. and lots of sunshine. but as you also touched on, irma is a huge story, even though it's not going to make a direct impact here, we are tracking her track rate now, a category 5, currently sustained wind speeds are at 160 miles per hour. and she's moving at west-northwesterly 60 miles per hour, and the current central pressure is 925 millibars. i say all of that to say we can continue its path and look here. she will maintain her strength as a category 5 for the next several hours and eventually become a category 4. however, the big concern is that hurricane irma is not encountering any landmasses. so, the issue is that there is nothing that's going to have her become a lot less organized or a lot weaker. so one of my concerns is

i'm vai sikahema. >> i'm tracy davidson.e are following both tropical storm jose impacting our area and the monster storm, hurricane maria, pounding puerto rico right now. a live picture from san juan this morning. nbc will have a special report shortly. first let's update you on jose's impact. now to the special report. >>> good morning, everyone. 6:31 on the east coast. we're coming on the air now because hurricane maria has made landfall on puerto rico. >> this is the scene in puerto rico right now. a powerful category-4 storm. maria is hitting with 155 mile-per-hour winds, torrential rain. the strongest storm this island has faced in nearly a century. nbc's gabe gutierrez is live in san juan now. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the situation here is dire. we've been pounded by ferocious winds for the last several hours, and it is only getting worse. hurricane-force winds now slamming into san juan. authorities say this could be a catastrophic situation. we have sought shelter inside a concrete structure. b
