welcome to the new great valencia street. i'm the director of public works in san francisco. it is a great honor to be here with you and all of the great folks we have around us. it is great to be here on a great day for the mission district, a great day for the ci city. the san francisco department of public works at the mayor's direction was able to secure $6.1 million, $5.3 million of which was federal funds, to make this project happen. i do want to acknowledge the u.s. department of transportation, the metropolitan transportation commission and county transportation authority for helping funnel that money from washington, d.c. right here to the streets of san francisco. as big and great as this new street is for san francisco -- and it is great -- it just yet another chapter in an ongoing narrative about our open space and the public realm in in san francisco from street fairs to outside festivals to extensions of the sidewalks to sunday streets, and any of you here this past sunday just a few blocks down for sunday streets in the mission knows what i'm talking about. bu

we have been around san francisco for quite a few years now and have been working on making valencia street a better place for biking and for everybody for many years. in fact, i was thinking back to 1999 when we first saw the bike lanes that have just been improved put in on valencia street and what an incredible day that was for this street and bicycling in the city. one thing we saw after the lanes were put in is first of all a huge number of people coming out and biking on valencia street making it one of our most popular bike corridors in the city. but we have seen the neighborhood blossom and thrive and seen the businesses thrive. that is one thing that makes us so excited about today and the changes that have just been put in. because we know from our experience in the past how much these improvements and how much making better space for bikes, better space for pedestrians, making sure space for everyone of all ages and abilitys to use and enjoy the street. we know how much that makes the neighborhoods thrive and city thrive. and it is wonderful to see a business owner out her

building center out there on the mission on valencia street. we've been following the progress of a project that is being planned there. the owners of preservation of new orleans has chosen this building with its chapel. it's a really cool chapel space in one of the buildings and what we hope will be a long anticipated second site for a preservation hall venue in the united states. the building owner is a local bay area restaurant tour and a live music enthusist. this is really exciting for san francisco, people have been asking for a long time when are they going to open another preservation hall. so if the project is approved, obviously the planning department and building permits and all that fun stuff that it has to go through to move from a school, which was quite some time, to a place of entertainment and obviously the permit would come before you. but the idea is that it would coincide with the 50th anniversary of preservation hall in new orleans and it would be really great thing for the valencia corridor. so we were able to last week i

if you look at the work that is being done at valencia's street, fisherman's wharf, all public plan similar to what was presented to us today. the port is doing work on the blue-green way as well. i think this is a key spot for san francisco visitors as well as residents to have an opportunity to explore this area further. a bit of a side note -- i had a bicycle stolen in front of this site. i had a friend's get broken into in front of this site. there was a stabbing at broadway and embarcadero a couple of nights ago. while there is no direct connection to urban planning and crime, it figures that in the dark area is not a great place to be. i think this plan, not specifically the sea wall, but all of the open spaces including lot 314 -- that is the corner of bay and embarcadero -- if we feel this is an important juncture, that one is more important from a traffic point of view. going straight to fisherman's wharf along the waterfront, are going left -- that is a key point. i am applauding the work that was presented and thank you. i want to clarify with the director that there is no action
