nick valencia joins us live from charlotte. nick, it looks quiet behind you there after an incredibly violent night. talk to us about what has happened there and what the scene is there at 3:33 in the morning. >> the situation was incredibly ugly just a couple of hours ago. we're in front of one of the string of businesses vandalized by demonstrators. what began as a peaceful protest at 7:00 or 8:00 local time turned violent quickly. this is what's been left behind. you can see some of the businesses are just beginning the cleanup process within the last hour. cleaning up the glass. there was graffiti, black lives matter, protesters painting blm on some of the businesses. as we walked up this block here, about a half mile up, it's more of the same. we saw evidence of looting. evidence of vandalized businesses. we also saw these left behind tear gas canisters or smoke flash bangs the police were launching at the demonstrators to try to disperse them. news crews were attacked. police officers were injured. some of them remain as

our cnn correspondent nick valencia is in charlotte and so is ed laugh endare a. there's a department of justice investigation now. they want that video released, they're calling for transparency. what are the people at the rally saying to you? >> reporter: this is a rally, it ended in front of the police department in charlotte. you look off to my side, various parts are barricaded by national guard soldiers and the crowd numbering close to 500 or so have been out here now, just arriving, chanting keith scott's name and also calling for release of the video which we have been hearing from city officials. that is something that could happen today. not clear when it will happen, but now the rally here at the footsteps of the police department, really one of the largest crowds gathered here over the course of the last week in front of the police department. many of the rallies have taken place in other parts of downtown. this is one of the largest gatherings i have seen in front of the police department since all of this started earlier this week. let you listen in

nick valencia, thank you. as far as the officer is concerned here, the officer who shot keith lamont scott, he's on paid administrative leave. his name is brentley vinson. he joined the charlotte mecklenburg police force two years ago. this is a photo we have of him from his time at liberty university. it's a christian school where he played football and majored in criminal justice. vinson then went on to join the carolina panthers before he became a police officer. my next guest knows officer vinson. just a short time ago i talked to michael scurlock who formerly played in charlotte for the carolina panthers, has worked in law enforcement in the sheriff's department for york county and talked to officer vinson as recently as last night. >> i think both sides are torn. i know the families are torn of the life that was taken. i know the officer is torn because he had to take someone's life. i've never met any individual, any officer that goes on a daily basis and says "hey, i'm looking to take someone's life."
