i want to start with my colleague, nick valencia, across myrtle beach checking around, seeing if there's damage thus far that's come from the winds and rains. what are you seeing where you are? >> reporter: we decided to go backup 20 miles away from myrtle beach, drive around to see what kind of damage the storm brought to the area. you know, they were expecting catastrophic damage all week long. we've been here since earlier this week warning residents that this storm, it -- it wasn't a storm that one should take lightly. here, though, we haven't seen any significant damage. we're in an area called conway, south carolina. it's about 20 miles inland from myrtle beach. it's an area that is prone to flooding. in fact, i spoke to the emergency manager early this morning. just a short time ago, asked if they've seen reports of damage or injuries. he said really now it's too early to tell. just like where you are now, this area still under a curfew. the only cars we see are police vehicles cruising the streets to make sure everyone is okay. we're not seeing any significant damage, but the win

a 'nique valencia went on an aerial tour. >> reporter: a small community here in south carolina stillith major flooding. we're high above the skies of conway, south carolina and we wanted to give you a bird's eye perspective of what residents are still dealing with here and just take a look for yourself. this subdivision here is near the river, but now most of it is under water. earlier we were in this community and saw residents as they were desperately trying to sandbag their homes, residents that didn't think they were going to get any water. now that water is starting to creep its their homes at its height. we're told by local emergency management the whack ama river is causing a rise of 3 inches per hour. by the end of the day it had gone up 2 feet. here we are, we're told that the river has stabilized a bit, and it's gone up a foot. they're not expecting the river to crest until sometime early tuesday. the national guard is on hand as well as local resources to assist residents. desperately clinging to hope, we hope they will not lose their homes. the good news is no injuries ha

i want to quickly go to cnn's nick valencia in conway, south carolina, near myrtle beach. nick, are people there heeding these warnings and evacuating? >> reporter: approximate wolf, we're standing in the middle of highway 501, the main thoroughfare out of myrtle beach, 20 miles inland, and it's starting to look like a ghost town. local officials tell us that's because people are listening to the warnings. those dire warnings being issued by the local governor, saying people will not be around to help you out if you decide to stay. this traffic is light right now, but we've been here since the early morning hours, at times seeing very heavy traffic, that's because people they say were listening to get out ahead of this storm. we saw people bring their pets, small dogs, even horses carrying them out of this storm ahead of that landfall, as well as adults carrying their elderly parents. a big concern for those deciding to stay. wolf? >> nick, what are some of the hazards for those who don't evacuate, don't heed the order? >> reporter: it goes without saying, you're not only

cnn's nick valencia is in conway, south carolina. nick, what are you seeing there?> reporter: jim, we're 20 miles inland from myrtle beach where the national guard and state police have reversed these highway lanes to try to get residents out as fast as possible. >> this storm is not a glancing blow. this storm is going to be a direct hit on to our coast. >> reporter: tonight officials are pleading with everyone along the east coast to heed the warning and not underestimate florence's strength. the hurricane, seen in this close-up satellite image, expected to be the most powerful to hit the coast in decades. >> everything that you have been hearing about this storm in terms of its severity is all true. >> reporter: this hurricane hunter speaking to cnn from inside the storm, has a firsthand look at just how serious it is. >> there is nothing to prevent this storm from continuing to intensify. >> reporter: more than one million people in virginia and the carolinas are under a mandatory evacuation. states of emergency have been declared there as well as in maryland an

i also want to check in with nick valencia, a bit north of us in myrtle beach.round conway, south carolina. what have you found there, nick? >> reporter: well, the big challenge here, erica, is flooding. we have been here all morning watching water flood the roadway. check out what's going on behind me. some good news is that water seems to have started to recede a bit as rain has lightened up. check out this home here. we have been showing you this all morning long. it is pretty much underwater, not entirely. first couple of steps. water seems to be inching up closer and closer towards the first story and porch there. it is not a matter of if or when flooding will hit conway. this is an area accustomed to flooding. saw it in 1999 during hurricane floyd and hurricane matthew a couple years ago. in the next couple days what officials are extremely worried about is river increasing. waccamaw river is a couple miles away. as the river continues to swell, that water has to come somewhere. north carolina, water will come south. local police are concerned about that.

correspondent nick valencia in conway, south carolina. nick, glad you're there, reporting from the ground. they have record flooding. what are you seeing in the area, how are they preparing for what's to come? >> reporter: the best way it has been described is by local residents. it is like a slow motion disaster. we have been here all week long. we have all known it is coming, all seen the water creep inch by inch from the waccamaw river. it is all overflow and now getting to people's homes. believe it or not, this is not officially a flood zone. it hasn't flooded in years past, maybe a little water in 2016, hurricane matthew was the last major storm that came through here, this area got just a little bit of water then. this had major flash flooding after hurricane florence landfall, and it is remarkable to see a community still suffering the aftermath of a hurricane that landed over a week ago. all morning long, we have seen residents come to the area, picking their jaw up off the floor after seeing the water here, they're not used to s
