up to this point, even when it was just the first lady and valerie jarrett, the senior adviser who were going to represent the white house, the speculation that was rio de janeiro might have the advantage but as soon as the white house announced the president himself would be going, which was unexpected, he initially said health care was too big a problem for him to leave it behind. he said we can take the time, health care is on a better course, as soon as they made the announcement, all the speculation, betting odds went up that chicago might get it now. >> what's the downside if the president goes all that way and doesn't get it? >> a big risk. he has gone out on a limb here, spending some of his diplomatic international capital in doing this in a way testing his popularity. he has been very popular around the world, even before the time he was elected and all of his foreign trips, met by huge crowds. in spending some of this capital, doesn't get it i think they will all be asking, some of that star power diminished. again that is what we will find out tomorrow. >> we will talk about

the president from chicago, many of his top advisors from chicago, rahm emanuel, valerie jarrett, the list goes on and on. it's reported mayor daly now in office for 20 years, longest serving mayor in chicago history, longer than his father even, put the arm on the president to come forward. the first lady planned to go to copenhagen, there ahead of the president, had made her pitch and the president parachuted in there, controversial trip, in terms of republicans and the president's opponents, saying he is not the mayor of chicago, daly is, but president obama is the president of the united states, there was plenty on his plate. and now because this crashed and burned in such a spectacular way, chicago being the first sti city to be voted out of the competition the long knives will be out from the opponents. remains to be seen how much political damage is going to be done to the president as he heads into what's going to be a tumultuous fall season with congress. mayor daly will be facing serious questions about the commitment he put forth for chicago which, of course, ultimately fai

white house leader valerie jarrett and of course, president obama. nbc chief white house correspondent chuck todd joins us now. what are they saying in terms of all the reaction from republicans who are saying we told you so. you shouldn't have put the u.s. prestige, the prestige of the presidency on the line. >> they're trying to make lemonade. it's not a very good tasting lemonade, to be honest. the lemons that they were dealt here. they're trying to say, their spin is we won't polyjays for trying to promote america around the world. behind the scenes, is there probably some second-guessing? maybe a little bit. they came under intense lobbying from people like mayor daley in chicago who politically is really probably going to pay a bigger price for this than anybody else that was involved simply because he engaged so much of the city in this and put a lot of his own political stature on the line here. but i think they got to sit here and say it is better to have tried and lost than to be the president sitting in the oval office, watching the vote c

valerie hogue from the school of pharmacy is here to tell us about it. thank you so much for coming in. >> thank you. >> it must be exciting. how's it going? >> it's going very well. we're fulfilling a pioneering tradition of a college of notre-dame of maryland. the college of notre-dame is really a college of firsts. it was the first school of pharmacy at a women's college in the united states. so we are on the cutting edge of providing not only good quality health care for our state but also for the nation. we're very excited about the inaugural class of 70 students. >> i thought it was interesting, you mentioned it was the first for women. this is actually a great field for women, what i've read but why is that? >> it's a wonderful field for women. i can say that, having been a pharmacist for over 20 years now, providing not only education to patients but to students. the field actually, we're graduating at least 65% of our graduates nationwide are women. the field offers many, many areas in whiff women -- which women can work, not oath full time but

"scooter" libby was convicted of charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. libby told the fbi that it was cheney who ordered him to reveal plame's identity to reporter bus he couldn't recall the conversations. why are we telling you this now? cheney's version of events have been a source of intrigue. what did he say to prosecutors during his interview? today a federal judge ruled the fbi and the prosecutors must reveal some some of their notes from cheney's interview. some can be withheld for national security reasons and the justice department is planning to appeal and possible cheney may appeal as well, so any actual release of the interview may still be years away but there is still so much intrigue in the cia leak case about what dick chain nay's role was, his conversations with "scooter" libby that "scooter" libby could not recall what did dick cheney say about the conversations? the federal judge made us
