to keep her name alive until we realize what truly happened. >> our thanks to valerie castro for thatiscovered during the murdaugh investigation prompted police to reopen the case. joining us now is catie beck. what do we know about this? >> reporter: good moning, jose. initially, it was considered vehicular homicide. now it's a homicide investigation. the reason they haven't put more resources to the case is because they have been focused on the murdaugh investigation. now that that is complete, they plan to put more resources towards this investigation and really try and assist sandy smith in what she's trying to do, an independent review of this case. she has never believed that this was an accident or a hit and run. she thinks it was intentional. she thinks that person who did this is still out there. she's asking for an independent review. she wants to exhume her son's body and do an independent autopsy. with the cooperation of s.l.e.d., it's looking like there's more confidence in solving this case moving forward from her and her legal team. we spoke with her earlier this week a

valerie castro is following this for us. old who are say camacho is facing charges for child abduction, feonious restraint of a child, rape of a person under 15 and indecent liberties with a child. visitors say he was communicating with the 13-year-old through social media where he groomed her and lured her to leave her home outside of dallas. he allegedly drove her more than 1,000 miles to this shed where he lived in lexington, north carolina. the sheriff says he was contacted by an fbi special agent in texas about the case. sheriff's deputies went to the home where they staked out the property before pulling camacho over. investigators found the girl inside the shed just a few moments later. the mother of this young girl, who we are not identifying, is understandably so relieved to have her home. here is what she told our nbc team in that's. >> hugs. the night before she gave us a hug and a kiss and said good night. it is very terrifying. we know as parents and we know as adults -- >> reporter: the suspect could face additi

"ruby bridges", the 1998 film about one of the first black children to integrate an all-white school in 1960s new orleans is now shelved by the pinellas school district. she faced protesters and racial slurs walking into school flanked by federal marshals. before showing the film, parents of children at the elementary school were asked to fill out a permission slip. but one parent also filled out this complaint form, objecting to specific words in the film and concerns it would teach young students, quote, racial slurs, how they are different and white people hate black people. a school district spokesperson telling nbc news in a statement it was communicated with the parent that the school would not have any future showings during the school year as the movie had already been shown. also saying the elementary school is expected to engage in the formal objection process to review the film. earlier in the year, the same district pulled the book "the bluest eye" from high s
