welcome valerie jarrett. good to have you. valerie: it is a delight.: we have known each other for a while and i learned so much in this book that i should known about you, but start at the beginning and iran and why you are there, and why your father felt he had to go to iran. valerie: my father was a physician, and when he was leaving the army he wanted an appointment at an academic teaching hospital to do research in the u.s., and he could not find a job equivalent to his white counterparts. so he and my mother decided to look for opportunities outside of the u.s., and he landed a job carrying the department of -- and is starting a brand-new hospital in iran, so obviously the u.s. and iran have far better -- had a far better diplomatic relations in the 1960's. it really gave a black doctor from the u.s. an opportunity he did not have here, so he always described it in a sense of going over the color line, he stopped being a black doctor, he started being an american doctor in iran. we lived there until i was five. david: it is another example in way
