lieutenant vincent perez and firefighter paramedic tony valerio died fighting a blaze in san francisco's diamond heights neighborhood just last week. anne makovec is at st. mary's cathedral where services for men are just about to start. she joins us with more. anne, good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon, i'm here at gough and geary, st. mary's cathedral. you can see people lining up at the entrance behind me. thousands of people are here already waiting for the honor guard to escort the caskets down that aisle. about 6,000 people are expected to show up here at the church and it only seats about 2500 so it is going to be standing room only and you can see up there the flags being held between two ladder trucks. the service is set to start at 12:30 this afternoon. now, about an hour ago, a procession began in daly city. the two caskets draped with flags being carried out of the mortuary. the bodies of lieutenant vincent perez and firefighter paramedic tony valerio are being transported by fire engines to st. mary's. they are set to arrive just before 12:30 for that mass to begin. i

the valerio family is happy to be extending their hotel reservations. the fire department has to process all of this and continue to serve the city. >> thursday they watched as one of their own, lieutenant vincent perez was wheeled away from san francisco general. on friday, they started rolling in, many before dawn hoping to hear that they have not lost a second firefighter. >> it was a good sign that he was able to make it through the night. we were not so sure yesterday after the evening. but he is a fighter. he has participated in triathlons, it is very fit. >> his lungs have never faced a greater challenge, the 53 role firefighter and paramedic remains unconscious after injuring a flash over expos yesterday at the diamond heights fire. >> they are keeping him medical the paralyzed to help his breathing. if he moves a little bit, it will enter him. they put him in a bid that will help to relieve the pressure of his chest on his lungs. the news is pretty dire right now, but we still have no idea whether it will go one way or the other. >> the valerio

valerio and lieutenant vincent perez both died after going into a diamond heights home earlier this week. lisa amin guleziam was at the hospital. >> slowly and silently his body was we would to an awaiting van. silence broken by the rain and his family's tears. >> he was, as i alleges say, my best brother ever. i looked up to him and i just want to say he will be greatly missed. >> the pain hung in the air outside san francisco general hospital. a place that became a gathering spot for the hopeful. valerio's family and friends had been there around the clock since thursday. >> i can't even think about life without him right now. i don't know, it seems like he's still here. i can't rally quite process that he is actually passed. >> he and lieutenant vincent perez were rushed to the hospital after the two were found unresponsive inside this burning house in diamond heights. a sudden blast knocked them down. perez died late thursday. >> it is particularly difficult. you are mourning the loss of one and then to have another one very close from the same fire is challenging. >> today for the f

but 53-year-old anthony valerio is on a ventilator and surrounded by family in the icu. >> it's prettyruesome. no one wants to see it, but you have to, i had to talk to him for a minute. i don't know if he can hear me, but i had to say pull through. my mom did the same thing. my mom's struggling to keep it together. >> his brother is an athlete with a wicked sense of humor who loves to help people. the fire melted valerio's face mask and doctors are worried most about his lungs. >> they're desperately trying to stabilize him and get some response from him. they've done something to him to keep him so he doesn't move, so -- to help with his lungs. if he starts moving a little bit, it will damage what they're trying to do with helping him breathe. >> reporter: already mourning the loss of one firefighter, the san francisco fire department is hoping valerio pulls through. if he wakes up, he will be facing tough news, that his friend and colleague lieutenant perez is gone. funeral services should be announced for perez shortly. jean ellie, nbc bay area news. >>> inside that diamond heights

perez and valerio died last week in what is called a flash over. a house fire that heated up to 1,000 degrees. this will be a full mass this afternoon with several people speaking. it should not end any earlierer than 3:00. there will be a lot of roads that are closed or experiencing more delays. with more on that let's check in with sal. >> tara this morning one of the biggest closures begins around 9:00 in the morning near geary boulevard. between the viz dare row and golf street right at the top of the hill where the cathedral is. both directions will be closed. that's where they will park a lot of the vehicles that are attending the funeral in the past when we've had these events a lot of police and fire vehicles take up geary street. and then later on as tara mentioned we will see closures

vincent perez and a paramedic anthony valerio. were battling a fire on june 2nd that broke out in the diamond heights neighborhood of san francisco. perez died that day. valerio died the following saturday morning. will tran has been standing by at st. mary's cathedral in san francisco. that is the location of today's funeral. he is keeping an eye on preparations that are beginning to come into view. there are no stopping and no parking signs. >> officers are already starting to patrol the area in the early down stones. -- and lay down cones. has many as 5000 are expected to attend. dignitaries will be here as well behalf including house democratic leader nancy). for the first time, all 1500 san francisco firefighters will be able to attend because of the support firefighters from around the they have given. with that area right there to receive the vans, that area is designated for ambulances. three of those ambulances have an emotional attachment to this case.
