seven people are dead after a packed commuter train leaving new york city crashed into an suv during the evening rush. wabc is live in valhallalatest for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning tam. ntsb investigators will be arriving at the scene. they're supposed to leave washington, d.c. around seven:30 and arrive here at the scene in valhalla. now an suv stopped on the tracks at a crossing last night around 6:30. the commuter train unable to stop slammed into it resulting in a fiery explosion killing the suv driver and six people on board that train. hundreds of people had to evacuate into the snow. it was a terrifying situation. >> there was a passenger that ran past me. he had blood on his face and people were pulling the windows off trying to get out through the emergency windows screaming yelling. it was just total panic. >> reporter: now the scene has been secured and will remain that way until federal investigators arrive. the working theory, though, is that it was driver error not trainer roar that resulted in this crash. still very early though. once again seven people killed, 12 people injured. they are right

right now the latest on commuter train accident out of valhalla, new york. a train collided with a jeep cherokee and according to reports the gates came down on top of the vehicle, the train gates and stopped on the track. the driver got out to look at the rear of the car and then actually got back in the car, drove forward and that's when that driver was struck by the train. seven people confirmed dead include the female driver of the jeep cherokee and six passengers on the train and about 400 passengers that had to be rerouted by bus. joining me on the phone is wnbc reporter gus rosendale at the scene. describe to me how this played out before your eyes. >> well betty, good evening. you know, we got to the scene, hundreds of people on board that train were till in the process of getting reunited with their families. when's going on right now is ntsb go team on the way here. governor cuomo on scene giving us an update. big question is what was this truck doing the the crossing? stuck there? placing there? we don't know. as described it the female driver had

. >> nbc's adam reese joins me live from the scene of the accident in valhalla new york. what's the latest on the investigation and the victims? >> reporter: good afternoon, joy. eight patients remain here at the hospital with injuries that remain from lacerations to burns to broken bones. investigators from the ntsb who want to talk to both the engineer and the conductor to find out what they know about the accident. they'll also be looking at the recorders. one was sent to washington one here in new york. the data has been downloaded. they'll analyze that for train speed and when the brakes were applied. they'll also want to know why did ellen brody stop on the tracks? did the gate come down? did she try to lift it up? why didn't she heed the passenger behind her who was urging her to back up? they'll also do a site survey to determine when the conductor or the engineer saw her as they approached and when she might have seen the train approaching and whether or not she could have gotten out of the way. they'll be here for about five days. they say they'll have a final r

new york city. the accident happened in valhalla, some 32 kilometers north of new york. journalist with abc news in new york city, we can take you to her now. she is at the scene. lana, what happened? >> reporter: hello lucy. yes, it happened here just over my shoulder. can you see that train is still burnt out. a tremendous number of casualties. six people in the train died along with the driver and 12 people injured. it is the worst accident in the history of the metro north railroad. >> what happened lana the driver stopped, did she, and then got out of her car? >> reporter: that's exactly right. they're still piecing together exactly what happened. what we know is this -- she stopped -- eyewitnesss say she got out of her car. the gate had come down upon it. she walked around the back of her car, got back in it and then pulled forward. that, unfortunately, put her on a collision course with the train. upon impact her car burst into flames and the electrified third rail of the train itself pierced through that first car of the train, lighting it on fire. one paramedic
