a vallejo couple survived all the shaking in ecuador. they cold kpix5's joe vazquez how this quake compares to anything that's hit the bay area. >> i'm from the bay area. we feel earthquakes but this was pretty intense, more than anything we have felt in the bay area. >> reporter: alice grandleman and bill freedman are vacationing in ecuador 20 miles from the epicenter of today's earthquake. here are some of their snapshots of the damage. >> all of the buildings here are made out of cement and the slide walls had crumbled down, bricks had crumbled down on the side. >> reporter: alice and bill are healthcare professionals. she at ucsf, he at kaiser permanent. once it was over, it was still dicey. >> we were really kind of scared because there was a tsunami alert. we didn't know how serious that was. we had no way to get out, no place to go. all we had to go -- we had to go back to get our stuff. >> reporter: joe vazquez, kpix5. >> in the end a tsunami never followed the aftershocks but the couple could have trouble getting back to vallejo

in vallejo. with her car still running, she takes her loot, slams the door and then she drives away. kpix 5's emily turner is outside the vallejo post office with a push to prevent more crimes like these. >> reporter: it's widespread. i talked to one postal man who said on his route out of the 10 cluster boxes he served 6 having compromised. that means there is only four left and it's only a matter of time. the postal service wants to get ahead of the game now. take a look at this security video. postal investigators certainly are. you can see what looks to be a woman pull up in a van to a cluster box. when she walks around to the back, you know it's not hers. investigators say she is a crook and at least one part of the rash of mailbox thefts in the vallejo, american canyon area. >> she should be in jail. yes. >> reporter: that's an easy answer. >> yeah. but this is a difficult case. >> reporter: the young men are from vallejo. when their families arrived at the command center, they were told the chances for survival were not good. a total of five young men were swept into the water. three managed to get out alive. >> they were very distressed. very in shock. it was very heartbreaking to see them in that state. >> reporter: according to the fire department, the five young men were in the water up to their knees and had interlocked their arms to stay together but the currents were still too strong. the three who survived got out several yards from where they first went in. one woman watched as the young men were checked out by paramedics. she said neighbors know to be careful at this beach. >> when the waves are like this it looks harmless. as the tide comes in wave after wave, it's got a really bad undertow. the search stressed over six miles of ocean beach and included a coast guard helicopter and a few boats. firefighters spent hours perched atop their ladders. this was the 12th search on the ocean beach t
