ktvu, amanda quintana is in vallejo right now to tell us what that means for the city of vallejo. amanda. good morning. the police department here is seeing a severe shortage in police officers. as of this weekend, there were only 34 officers available to patrol the city. now that has raised concerns about whether the law enforcement agency can really protect the public here and keep them safe. so how will declaring a state of emergency here in the city actually help? well, it allows the city manager to deputize additional city personnel as needed for the protection of this community. the interim police chief says there are 51 officer vacancies right now in a department that has 132 funded sworn officer positions. he says one option is to hire retired police officers for the temporary part time work. the department has made some pretty drastic changes to try to address the situation in including disbanding the traffic unit and moving officers around to fill patrol spots. but it continues to lose officers and might need to make bigger changes. you might need to go down to four team
