city tries to save money. jeff bush has more on the changes being made. >> fire station 25 on the drive and vallejo closed its doors of atm. station 26 closed and 21 is due to one ladder truck. they had to move the fire equipment and fire fighters to one station. the changes are results of the city council decision earlier this month the closures on attempt to save money. the overall staffing in the vallejo fire department will go down from 18 fire fighters to 15 firefighters per ship. the will be no layoffs as a result of the shuffle because the department has lost only fire fighters over the years. in 2006 the department had a staff of 122 fire fighters. today the department down to 67 pier the changes effectively reduce the number of fire officials from 5 to 4. in vallejo kron 4 news.

antioch city leaders say they are trying to avoid the financial fixes that have cursed cities like oakland and vallejo, that is, layoffs and bankruptcies. so how does the city plan to do that? well, by raising sales taxes, but residents stood shoulder to shoulder tonight trying to fight that plan. now the residents started pouring in at about 6:00 tonight and even though there was nowhere to sit people continued their march into antioch. city council chambers, the message, the city is broke according to the city council and they blame the dire financial circumstances on record foreclosures within city limits, so broke says the city, the loss of 20 nonsworn community -- the last of 20 nonsworn community police officers were laid off last thursday. 41 other city employees also received pink slips. one council member anticipates antioch could become the next city facing bankruptcy. if residents do not pass this half cent proposed sales tax. >> we're probably looking at layoffs of officers again. >> reporter: do you have any idea how many officers you may lay off? >> the city is facing between a 3.7 and $

this morning the city of vallejo is reorganizing its entire fire department, shutting down two fire stations and re-opening one that had previously been closed. this is being done to help that crash strapped city save some money. now station number 25 on minidrive and station number 26 on fulton avenue will be closed down today. station 22 on 5th street, which was shut down four years ago is now going to be re-opened. firefighters from the stations being closed will be reassigned and their equipment will be moved to other stations. >> we are going to hold -- maintain the stations, hopefully that will -- you know things are going to get better. i mean they -- we are at the -- you would think the bottom now so hopefully it will -- get better and we can move equipment back into these stations and open them back up. >> there will now be 15 firefighters on duty at a time, down from 18. fire officials say vallejo will also rely on neighboring fire districts for their back up. >>> in berkeley overnight firefighters put out a suspicious fire. it was right next to a uc student domitory. this happened
