[ bagpipes ] >> reporter: kapoot's mother, wife and daughters were sitting behind the flag-draped coffin at vallejo high school. so far we've heard from vallejo's police chief, the assistant basketball coach and some of the members of the team. >> we rode to school and talked about the usual things about school, grades and the team. as i stepped out of the car. i turned around and walked away not knowing that would be my last moments with him. >> reporter: thousands of police officers from all over the state are paying their respects. kapoot was killed during a bank robbery chase november 17th. the suspect shot him in the back. >> tremendous love for the community, members of the department. i'm at a loss for words. >> reporter: kapoot was a heavily-decorated officer. officer of the year in 2000. police say he was a family guy. in fact, he took into his home the children of his close friends who were killed in a motorcycle crash in january. he was actually in the process of adopting them when a family member stepped forward to

he was 45 years old. 19 years served as part of vallejo police department. he received two medals of courage while he was working here. prior to vallejo pd, he worked for chp and also served in the marines. here's the scene yesterday afternoon. this is a 100 block of janice street. this tragedy began unfolding around 1:30 yesterday afternoon. capoot responded to an alleged bank robbery happening at a nearby bank of america on springs road. he spotted the alleged suspect vehicle which was a silver suv. he chased after it for a good three to four miles. he forced that suv to spin out of control. and the suspect allegedly ran out and here's what happened next. >> shortly after exiting his vehicle and chasing the suspect, officers who were arriving just moments later heard several shots fired. they discovered our officer down in the backyard and he was mortally wounded. >> reporter: and capoot was rushed to kaiser hospital where he later died. as you can see, his comrades at the police department gathering outside the hospital for support. and taking a live look

let's go now to this police presser in vallejo. >> on today's date at around 13:36 hours police respondedo a call of a bank robbery at the bank of america on springs town center. while officers responded to that call, they received some additional information about a vehicle which was associated with the suspect which was fleeing the area. officers in route to the call were able to locate this vehicle, attempted to stop this vehicle, we were led on a vehicle pursuit that roughly three or four miles which terminated in the 100 block of janice avenue. the pursuit was terminated because our officer employed a pit maneuver which spun the vehicle out. and he then pursued the suspect on foot into a residential neighborhood. shortly after exiting his vehicle and chasing the suspect, officers who were arriving just moments later heard several shots fired. they discovered our officer down in the backyard and he was mortally wounded. he was transported at that time to a local hospital. and emergency medical doctors and technicians and nurses worked on him for about an hour with emergency medical pr

officer james capoot was a 19- year veteran of the vallejo police department. he is also a marine vet and a recipient of two medals of courage. he was 45 years old, survived by his wife and three daughters. he is also coach at the vallejo high school girls basketball team. a lot of people came by the lobby of the police department to drop off flowers, cards, and their prayers. now, his accused killer henry smith from fairfield. smith, who is 37 years old pleaded not guilty to a slew of charges, five charges against him total. among them, murder against a peace officer and capital murder. if he is found guilty of these charges, he could get the death penalty. now, his next court appearance is tomorrow when a judge will make -- will rule on a gag order filed by the prosecutors. the shooting happened on the afternoon of november 17 on janice street. capoot has been chasing smith by car and then when smith got out of his car, capoot ran after him into the nearby neighborhood backyards and that's when smith allegedly shot him. police say smith had robbed a bank of am
