narrator: in the yaqui valley of mexico, wheat farmers are also caught in the struggle between makingest, farmers' incomes are barely keeping pace with their expenses. and the excess nitrogen from their fertilizer washes out of their fields and threatens marine ecosystems, the underground water supply, and even the atmosphere. can farmers maintain their standard of living and still protect the environment? this question is being explored by a fruitful collaboration between researchers at stanford university and agronomists in mexico. pamela matson, a professor and biogeochemist from stanford university, is one of the directors of this study. matson: i study the chemical interactions between plants and microorganisms and soil and water and atmosphere systems, and i focus in particular on nitrogen. a lot of my research is focused on what happens with nitrogen fertilizers in agricultural systems and how they affect the environment. narrator: an essential element for all living things, nitrogen is the main nutrient in many fertilizers. matson: all organisms need a lot of nitrogen. plants

castro valley on apricot way. we were told that the facility was shut down with more than 20 elderly and disabled residents still need. katy utehs was at that facility, speaking to one staff member who stayed behind. >> reporter: heather he was clearly exhausted and emotional, one of three staff members who stayed behind to care for all these people. at this hour the sheriff's offices is working to obtain a search warrant because this could become a case of elder abuse. the sheriff's office is working to identify all the people who lived there, account or them and find out where the staff went and who the owners are? >> maraus rolland is the cook at valley manor community care home in castro valley, where more than 20 people, elderly, disabled and mentally ill were abandoned. >> the management and everything, they just bailed out on the people, so me and my co-workers we stayed until we got help. >> reporter: help came 48 hours later, had that time rolland and two other employees struggled to care for the resident

so a mild day ahead, warm temperatures in the interior valleys then tonight low clouds and fog likely to make a return maybe thick in spots along the coastline and parts of the north bay and really minor changes for the week ahead maybe cooler weather toward this next weekend. but a good push of the low clouds and fog early on this morning at least into the bay and some in the north bay valleys. that's now just beginning to break up and move toward the coastline. a strong blocking ridge of high pressure sitting across the pacific and, well, looks like it will keep the jet stream moving well to the north of the bay area. so no rain just yet. i think we keep things dry at least the next five to seven days and maybe longer than that. so other than that, looks like we have some decent weather ahead for today. a near weather repeat to what we had just yesterday. so plan on mild temperatures as we head into the afternoon. looks like that fog will keep you cool out toward the coastline. we have a hurricane brewing this one off the coast of mexico and this is a strong category 3 hurricane nea
