. >>> castro valley, more than a dozen elderly people were essentially abandoned in a care facility for two days after the state shut it down. authorities have been working since yesterday to evacuate the people left behind with the skeleton staff at the valley springs manor nursing home near redwood in castro valley. a notice saying "closed for business" is on the front door of the valley springs manor nursing home and the alameda county sheriff says state social services shut down the facility thursday, but 14 elderly residents were still there more than two days later. relatives say they didn't know where their loved ones were or some of them said that they had been there with only a skeleton staff. one of those left behind is a woman whose daughter-in-law says the family just cannot understand how this happened. >> i'm actually pretty upset because we have no idea where, you know, his mom is. the officers are trying to figure out where they relocated her to, so it's really infuriating. pretty brutal and horrific to know -- not even just her. there were over a dozen people left behind that couldn't fend for

. >> reporter: maurice had only been a cook at valley springs manor for three months when the state issued a shutdown order for the castro valley elder care facility effective last thursday. he says about five state workers had been there on and off all week. but come friday night, they all left leaving roland and a maintenance worker to try to care for 14 workers at the house. >> we was doing the best we could to make sure the residents was all taken care of because like the state they was supposed to be there from my understanding but they weren't there after 5:00, they were out of the building. >> reporter: believing they wouldn't be paid the house managers and staff never showed up on friday. so roland continued to cook for the residents and even called 911 four times to report various people's health problems. but he never actually mentioned that the facility was supposed to be closed. but because of the way they appeared, the fire crew that was there as they went in there between thursday and saturday never recognized that there were too few people or what the appropriate number was.

last thursday the state suspended valley springs's license, citing a long list of violations like insufficientnd failure to provide medications to patients and not reporting patient injuries and horrible maintenance and cleanliness. the owners were not allowed near the facility. end of story, right? wrong. some patients were still there. by the close of business on friday, anyone with authority was gone. nowhere to be found. the residents were left in the hands of two care givers and a cook who said they didn't have the training to do all they were doing for the residents and they felt compelled to stay. this man, a cook at the home for three months said he and the other untrained workers took over, trying to do anything they could to look after the residents who needed around the clock care. >> did you feel overwhelmed with what you had to do for the residents? >> i was overwhelmed on day two. >> because the patients needed help with everything from using the bathroom to preparing meals and taking medication which no one was authorized to provide. >> there definitely wasn't the people that wa
