he came to study law in van buren. when he was traveling the law circuit he came to fayetteville and met matilda. he and matilda winlock got married in 1847. in 1862 in february, the confederates were being driven out of missouri and into arkansas. as they were being driven through arkansas, as they came through fayetteville, they decided to burn all of the confederate stores. where all of the food and ammo was held. basically, the soldiers ransacked the town. it is said some citizens participated also, but it was a pretty dark time for fayetteville. headquarters house was directly threatened when the fayetteville city institute, across the street, was used as an arsenal for the confederate army. they decided to set fire to it. when the building caught fire, the faulty shells that were left started to explode, endangering this house. they were able to save it. here is a picture of the arkansas college and the tebbit 's house. the president of arkansas college lived across the street. arkansas college was not burned in

that is on loan to us from the martin van buren historic site. here we are with william henry harrison. one of our shortest-lived presidents. what we have for him is a presentation -- an inaugural cane which was presented to him. we're not sure who it was presented by, by the idea of presenting a cane to somebody or a walking stick, probably a more appropriate term, was a show of respect and a show of esteem to that person that you're giving it to. around the top of the cane it is engraved on his inauguration day of march 4th, 1841. canes were very common accessories as far as for out walking around. i think now we think of them as something that older people use to get around, but they were very fashionable in their day. here we are with john tyler. john tyler was the vice president for william henry harrison and with harrison's death, he became president. and what we have on loan from -- through the virginia historical society and actually through his great granddaughter is a card and gaming table, which was a beautiful inlaid wood. it's probab
