let's bring in cnn meteorologist derek van dam. derek, it's not the only storm we're watching.here do you want to start? >> i want to start in federal america. because this storm has shown and proven some very concerning trends. just during my watch, my shift starting late saturday evening local time here in the united states, what are we, in the middle of the night on sunday, sunday morning i should say, i have seen this storm go from a 60-mile-an-hour tropical storm to now a category 1 atlantic hurricane with 80-mile-per-hour sustained winds. at least 20 miles per hour difference just in a few hours. this storm is strengthening quickly, and you can see just basically where it is headed. unfortunately, to the same location that is were hardest hit by major hurricane eta less than two weeks ago. the official track from the national hurricane center, this is also a concerning trend. in the updates just three hours ago, it was forecast to be a category 3 upon landfall, late monday into early tuesday. now forecast to be a category 4 with winds at least 130 miles per hour. i mean,

for more, let's turn to our meteorologist derek van dam.t's the late snes. >> we're seeing the worst case scenario unfolding before our eyes. this storm has rapidly intensified within the past 24 hours. we'll talk about that in detail. here's the latest information from the national hurricane center 4:00 a.m. update. that's a big update. we always anticipate the numbers and whether or not a storm is strengthening or weakening. unfortunately, unwelcome news with hurricane iota. which at the beginning of my shift, late saturday evening, was a tropical storm. it is now a full fledged category one atlantic hurricane. 80 miles per hour sustained winds and becoming more and more organized as the minutes and hours turn over. to rapidly intensify a typhoon or hurricane or cyclone needs to strengthen by 35 miles per hour in a matter of 24 hours. and it has done so by 40 miles per hour within the past day. it continues to rapidly intensify and, in fact, the old official forecast from the national hurricane center had this a category three land fall.

cnn meteorologist derek van dam is live in clearwater beach this morning, give us the latest how is therm affecting florida at this hour? >> reporter: it has been gusty, very rainy all night look in clear water and the pinellas county region. i cannot believe it's the middle of november and we're chasing hurricanes. but here we are, just to the south of where tropical storm eta made landfall moments ago with winds topping 50 miles per hour. there was storm surge reported in and around the tampa bay region. in fact, there was about 2 to 4 feet of storm surge, so that's water above normally dry ground, and they had to actually rescue some vehicles from that flood water as well. now, there were wind gusts reported in excess of 60 miles per hour, just to our south. and that took off some mobile home roofs. now, here at clear water, in pinellas county, we have had just a blustery night, but nothing that these residents can't handle. it seems to be another day. we call it hurricane fatigue. we have had so many land falling storms during this record breaking season. what does a hurricane do? i

let's get the latest with cnn meteorologist, derek van dam. >> let's get to the most immediate threaton vamco as you said. 150-kilometer-per-hour sustained winds. there is a lot of cool ocean water temperatures along the coast of vietnam. really, you need temperatures above 28 degrees celsius to sustain a typhoon or hurricane. water temperatures there, just checked, about 24 to 25 degrees celsius. so this has caused rapid weakening in the storm. this is mainly a rain event for central vietnam. you can see rainfall totals over the past 24 hours have been substantial. another 50 to 100 millimeters. it has been an extremely busy past two months for vietnam. they have had eight land-falling, named storms just in the past two months. very similar things happening on the other side of the earth. we have had the most amount of named, tropical systems across the caribbean, gulf of mexico, and the atlantic ocean. that's the atlantic basin. and unfortunately, we have, yet another, storm to talk about. this storm is strengthening and has the potential to rapidly intensify. we use that term when

cnn meteorologist derek van dam is live in clearwater beach with more. what's the situation, derek?od morning, alisyn. we are seeing first light here across the gulf of mexico. pier 60, clearwater, directly behind me, pretty much unscathed, as you can see. no damage there. but what has been a very drawn-out, very fickle and notoriously challenging storm to actually forecast, it strengthened to a hurricane, then weak to find a tropical storm, as it made landfall for its fourth time. remember, sunday, it made landfall in the florida keys. this is the second time it's impacted this state. the reason being, the water temperatures in order to sustain a tropical storm or hurricane to strengthen has to be above 80 degrees. water temperatures here have cooled off. it's the middle of november. and as a meteorologist, i can't believe i'm actually chasing a storm this time of the year. but we talk about the threats with a long-duration storm. that being storm surge. and that was materialized across much of tampa bay, 2 to 3 feet. in fact, check out this footage coming out of madeira near tampa
