. >>> more of the political impact of what's happening, we're joined by van jones in los angeles. why is the violence and rioting in baltimore so much worse than what we've seen since michael brown and other cities that have gone through similar incidents? >> it's hard to say. it definitely is a different level of violence and property destruction than we have seen before. with ferguson, the police actually did fall behind the curve there when things did turn violent, but it was contained. it was actually -- you know, just there on a three, four, five-block area. this is a very, very wide footprint. what you have to deal with is that there is a powder keg in a city like baltimore, people really don't understand sometimes around the world, there are parts of the united states where you have literally third world levels of urban poverty. baltimore is a city like that. you also have a whole wave of young people, a big youth bulge in the united states. the unemployment rate for some of them is sometimes as high as 50, 60%. so you have a powder keg there. also the police department in

. >> in fact van jones, "the new york times" reported today that the justice department has opened 20ights investigations into police abuse and each time one made the supreme court, they sided with the police. is that surprising to you? >> you know it's not surprising because it's a very very tough thing to do to get law enforcement criminally prosecuted. listen when a police officer goes above and beyond the law, you want a couple things. you either want the officer disciplined, demoted, or fired, or you want the officer criminally prosecuted. if you look at the backlog on justice trying to get officers disciplined, demoted, or fired, that has nothing to do with going to prison. you can go get a job the next day doing something else. even that is broken down in so many of our law enforcement communities. that's why you're seeing so much outrage, because people who live in these communities, we could pretend to be shocked, you know every night. people who have been living in these communities, before there were cell phones with video everywhere have been complaining about these for de

. >> i want to bring many van jones who has been watching this as well as really much of the country and much of the world. van, your thought s on what you're seeing on the streets of baltimore? >> it is a tragedy. you're seeing one of the things i think is very healthy in of african-american community, the fraternity and sororities are not just campus based organizations for college students. they did a they are a key piller in the community. you have fraternities, clergy out there is very important. i want to say something else. i know this mayor. i like her. i respect her. i was just in baltimore with her about ten days ago. she had a platform. i think she's been criticized for her words and for her deeds and i think that is going to continue. let me give a sense of perspective about the kinds of things i think she was probably trying to balance. we talk easily about balancing the first amendment rights of good protesters with public safety. this is another balancing act that every executive has to figure out, which is how much response is too much? we create a cycle of violence. i

let's bring in mark garagos and van jones. we see in the video and why it does not jibe with what the police incident report was. the video, let's start with that. mark i want to start with you because i want the legal perspective on this first. the video makes a very compelling case against the police officer but, of course it's not the whole story. something happened before that cell phone was turned on and the eye witness says that there was a struggle on the ground. there was a struggle that involved a stun gun, a laser -- a taser, i should say. here is what the officer called in to 911. listen to this. >> dispatch shots fired. subject is down. he grabbed my taser. >> [ bleep ]. >> 523, shots fired. he grabbed your taser. subject is down. >> okay. mark, if there was a struggle on the ground as the eye witness has said if there was some sort of confusion about who had the taser, would any of that have justified what we saw next in the video where the deadly force is used? >> my position would be no it would not justify it h

let's go first to athena jones live at the location of this newly revealed stop in which this van paused for whatever reason. athena jones, tell me where's the camera how did police find out? >> i'll tell you all of that brooke. the police say they found out as a result of their thorough comprehensive, and ongoing review of all of the public and private cameras in the area. we're talking right now about a private camera here at this convenience store. we're not far from where freddie gray was first picked up. this is a korean owned store. our producer spoke with owner. he told her that police came by some time last week likely earlier in the week. he doesn't really remember because he was busy when they stopped by. they asked to review his footage. he showed them how to look at the footage on his computer and didn't think much of it. a few hours later, they sent other folks over to make a copy of that video from his computer on a usb. we're talking about this camera here. you can see house there's two surveillance cameras. you'll also notice that they have been cut. you can see here the

learn major new detail today, the van carrying freddie gray made a previously unknown stop before delivering him to the police precinct. let's get to the athena jones, she's joining us from the corner of mozer and freemont. how did police find out about the previously unknown stop? >> reporter: well, we found out in the police press conference that was held a short while ago that it was discovered. this is a quote, discovered from a privately-owned camera. but there's still a lot of questions about which just camera. i'll explain why. this is the stop. this is a grocery store, it's owned by a korean family. the owner does not speak very good english, and so we're going to try to get someone who can talk to him who speaks korean. you can see out here the surveillance cameras outside, it's unclear when those were unplugged or cut. we haven't been able to find that out. we can tell you this this store was looted on monday night by some young people in the area who pulled out the air conditioner and went inside. we're told from a neighbor who has been helping this family make a police report, helping them call 911, she called several times on monday ni

jones in baltimore for you. >> speaking of those questionable circumstances there are still a lot of unanswered questions about how freddie gray came to be so severely injured during that police van ride two weeks ago. but today the focus is on honoring his memory and saying good-bye to him. gray's family has asked that there not be any protests today. this after that largely peaceful demonstration on saturday ended in violence. there were skirmishes, vandalism, six police officers suffered minor injuries. a lot of supporters have been saying that they need the time and the space to heal after this incident and that protests that can become violent, those end up being distractions. one people who said that is congressman elijah cummings. he represents about half of the city of baltimore. and he'll be one of the speakers at today's service. yesterday he spoke emotionally about the toll this incident has taken not just on gray's family but on the baltimore community as a whole. he told me he wants to see the baltimore police department make changes so that it can become a model department for the country. and he also talked about the importance of improving police community relatio
