the van ness brt project. you the effect of this project. -- van ness effectiveness project. commissioner campos: we have a question for commissioner mar. commissioner mar: thank you. many of us were at the mtc/abag meeting. the positive things are really great, and i and whether you enologist them, but could i ask you about the impact of the decision to prioritize north bay and east bay for the new small starts funding and how that will impact the van ness brt or geary brt project? >> that i think the dust is still settle in on this, but for the benefit of the public, for those who may not have been watching, there are $660 million in the regional transportation plan that was set aside for yet to be determined new or small start projects in the region. in the past, it has been important to get the seal of approval from the mtc, to say this is a regional party. it helps our delegation in washington. traditionally, this was a focus on the major rail extension. when the game changer is here, we have this new pot of money called small starts. we have projects like van ness brt a

the left turn on van ness, that is the number one cause for collisions. number three is currently where the median is today. this would fully separate the bosses -- the buses from traffic. this one would have left and right door vehicles, with buses running in the left most traveling. through analysis and environmental documents, we look at a number of different criteria, where transit performance was the most important thing for some. the option of reducing left turns has nearly twice the time saving benefits. the public inherently understood this. the main reason is that in the side-turning vehicles, they had to park and had to use the b r t lanes. pour that reason, the center- running allowed more through. however, there were challenges in each alternative. number three, because it is a hat on configuration, it might require widening the lanes, which would reduce the size of the median, completely reconstructing it. they would be directly over the sea were for the length of the corridor. the other challenge was the lengthosñ of the vehicles. the 47, mo

van ness is a different corridor, and we have two different types of propulsion with the buses. one is the sole hybrid in the future. 49 is an electrical vehicle. this would require two different sets of maintenance and challenges for procurement. there is a five-door motor coach in existence, but not a five- door elector coacric trolley con h in existence. there will be new vehicles scheduled. these vehicles the to be replaced, and that will add some of the branding and features that will distinguish the service. these vehicles are said to be replaced. we will leverage some of the funds as part of the project. >> one other thing that a think is important to keep in mind is, brt is not a rail system. it is a lain for expediting travel and congestion does not affect the buses. i think the other thing it does, which is really a fundamental benefits of having this kind of a system in the center is it allows for future changes in routings by the mta. 20 years from now the mobility needs for the population may be very different. the shape of the bus routes may be very different. we s

there have been a lot of concerns and resident complaints about the van ness system street lights in particular, and that will be converted. about 110of the street lights and the series loops -- in the series loop are owned bypg&e. over the next five years, reacent will cost about $25 million. so, i would like to talk a little bit about how we work with the street lights, how figure out priorities. i mentioned earlier, the available capital funding in our 10-year capit plan to replace are the funding source for a new street lights and pedestrian like projects. a number of streetlight projects are initiated by development, by third party, and by context, that third party sense that streetlight improvementnd hands that new system of street lights over to the city for our ongoing care and operational maintenance. more and more an importanting element of our street lights system. we recently hadoucommission adopt guidance that we are responsible for maintaining lights in the right of way, and wea wng t inrporate guidance for developers on pedestrian lighting as well as street lighting. t

across the street on the east side of van ness, cpmc proposes construction of a new nine- story 130 foot tall office building. these two buildings will be connected underground by a tunnel at the garage level. once construction of the cathedral hill hospital is complete, cpmc plans to transfer to you care services -- acute- care services to the new hospital. the pacific care campus will be used as an outpatient facility while the california campus will be sold. it is worth noting there are provisions in the development agreement that mandate the creation of community advisory groups at both campuses to guide future development and reuse of the california campus. on to the land use approval, there are many approvals required for the five new buildings proposed. i will only high glucose subject to board approval. the approvals include the development agreement that will cover all campuses, general plan amendments for the st. luke's and cathedral hill campuses, as well as several other approvals including conveyance, conversion of cedar streets of the cathedral hill campus, increased sidewa
