this 113th and south van ness. and an active scene there. there is still 160 firefighters in 60 trucks on the scene as the firefighters continue to work on this fire and make sure that it doesn't reignite. there is a lot. we talked to the family that owns one of the businesses impacted by this. they sell lumber and other wholesale construction supplies. they had a lot of flammable supplies. they don't know how it started. but the business has been for 50 years and it has been destroyed. and five other commercial buildings in the area have been heavily damaged by the fire. but the froms set they have the fire 75% contained. the progress is visible in the live picture where we have shown you of the scene. no active flames or heavy black smoke. the firefighters will remain on the scene throughout the day. they'll have another update for us at 10:30 this morning. we'll continue to post the latest information on this fire online and our social media accounts. we'll have another update at noon today. >>> they'll be dumping water on that one. >>> m

first people from miles around san francisco could see the heavy smokcoming from 13th and south van ness which is where the fire star building that area. one of the heartfelt sales company marketing for over 70 years. we did speak with the owner's son early this morning. but overall this was a challenging firefight for firefighters. take a look. >> reporter: a massive plume of heavy smoke towered over san francisco at 6:30 am. it quickly grew to five alarms which meant 160 firefighters and 60 trucks rushed to the scene to tackle it. firefighters described a difficult firefight as the flames spread to six commercial buildings across a two block radius consuming by power poles and sending live wires into the street. >> when the first firefighters got here, you could not see your hand in front of your face . there was that much black smoke through this entire alleyway. now we have firefighters who could be electrocuted in firefighters who could be damaged or hurt falling debris. >> which they had transformers falling on the ground and had to back everybody up and repositioned as it was proc

this is at 14th and van ness looking for hot spots. and that is where we find amy hollyfield with more. >> reporter: yeah, the scene is still very active. you see fire trucksstill blockings scene, they still have their ladder up. we also see pg&e crews hard at work. so firefighters are looking for hot spots and the pg&e crews working to repair their damaged power poles. officials say expect the streets to be shut down here for at least through the morning and possibly for days. this fire burned six commercial buildings, including a roofing company and a sheriff's building. and it also impacted some homes. we're told three people are now looking for a place to live. firefighters say the fire was so huge and moving so quickly, the fire hydrants in the area could not supply enough water. so they had to turn to tanks as far away as twin peaks. >> we quickly met our capacity for municipal water source and went to our high pressure water system. this is something that we train if a for and we plan on. >> reporter: the fire started at 6:30 ye

again, the fire is still very much burning in the area of south van ness and erie street. these are the pictures we were able to bring you first things to a pewter that sent them to us. a look from brother way but it tells the picture of a whole lot of active orange flame on the bottom. a very thick dark column of smoke rising straight up in the air. a minute ago, c paulson said the winds are only 11 miles per hour in the area. that's what allows the smoke home to form the way that it is. that's why it's not being blown all across the city. it's essentially just rising up. this is affecting traffic on the bay bridge. this is affecting one-to-one and affecting certainly city streets in the area of south venice and erie street. and number of large businesses in the area. we saw sherwin williams and there is a couple of other big businesses, cosco etc. in the air. we're still trying to get a good read on how this fire started. but right now the number one concern -- and i know you have a lot of bodies in sf fire -- the number one concern is to protect people and property. hav

we've upgraded pump station number 2 which is the base of van ness. we're also gearing up for another big construction year this year and anticipate breaking ground on three projects in the near future. we also continue to complete planning and design for a westside project. that potential project is undergoing environmental review, a state requirement. we want to thank supervisor fewer for her leadership in this project and all the collaboration from supervisor mar and yee's office on it as well. we're excited for this project. finally, we are also currently bidding on a project to continue motorizing efsw around the city. this adds resiliency to the system. in addition, the puc and san francisco fire department also work with development projects in san francisco to ensure that they, too, install efws infrastructure within their boundaries and adjacent neighborhoods. the pier 70 and hope sunnydale projects installed infrastructure. additionally, the board approved development agreements with efws infrastructure requirements for the potrero fire stat

we've upgraded pump station number 2 which is the base of van ness. we're also gearing up for another big construction year this year and anticipate breaking ground on three projects in the near future. we also continue to complete planning and design for a westside project. that potential project is undergoing environmental review, a state requirement. we want to thank supervisor fewer for her leadership in this project and all the collaboration from supervisor mar and yee's office on it as well. we're excited for this project. finally, we are also currently bidding on a project to continue motorizing efsw around the city. this adds resiliency to the system. in addition, the puc and san francisco fire department also work with development projects in san francisco to ensure that they, too, install efws infrastructure within their boundaries and adjacent neighborhoods. the pier 70 and hope sunnydale projects installed infrastructure. additionally, the board approved development agreements with efws infrastructure requirements for the potrero fire stat
