[ music ] >> van ness avenue runs from market street to bayan francisco. south vanness runs from south of market to cesar chavez street. originally residential after the 1906 earthquake it was used as a fire break. many car dealerships and businesses exist on vanness today with expansion of bus lanes. originally marlet street was named after james vanness, seventh mayor of san francisco from 1855 to 1856. vanness heavy are streets in santa cruz, los angeles and fresno in his honor. in 1915 streetcars started the opening of the expo. in 1950s it was removed and replaced by a tree-lined median. it was part of the central freeway from bayshore to hayes valley. it is part of uses 101. it was damaged during the 1989 earthquake. in 1992 the elevator part of the roadway was removed. it was developed into a surface boulevard. today the vanness bus rapid transit project is to have designated bus lanes service from mission. it will display the history of the city. van ness avenue. >> everything we do in the tenderloin, we urban outfit. here, this gives

the van ness improvement project was green lighted in 2016 and was such a complex project it got its own website. the original completion date was in mid-2020, however covid intervened and work crews, well, they joked that they actually found pandora's box once they dug underground into a tangle of sewar pipes and gas lines. the completion is set for next month when a redesigned van ness that has landscaped islands and brighter lighting. >>> money, money. they're earning 50 bucks each as part of the district's savings program. it's part of a new initiative named opportunity l.a. more than 44,000 first grade students will automatically receive a savings account with $50 of an initial deposit. it was actually made possible and funded by l.a. county, the city of l.a. and lausd. the account is available for students and parents to make deposits. students will be able to withdraw from the account once they turn 18. i love that. >> good opportunity for them. >>> day two of the historic supreme court confirmation hearings set to start in about two hours. ahead, a live report from washington

the countdown is on for the opening of san francisco's bus rapid transit system on van ness avenue moree up and running on april 1st. the new transit lanes are physically separated from cars to allow busses to travel without getting caught in traffic. passengers will also be able to board those busses more easily. the project includes improved lighting, sidewalk extensions, new countdown signals for people crossing van ness and improved accessibility for those with mobility needs. the improvements are expected to cut travel times for golden gate transit and the 47 49 90 meunier routes by 32. people couldn't be happier. i think we've had nothing but positive added reactions. people stop taking pictures with the cops up waves. we've had people southeast in front of the past because they see a bus on the bus way they share with their friends. and even though now are the few twitters tweets i've read. everybody is just excited to see the busses valley on the bus were ready to open. shades of you wrote a long during bus testing today, and it was a pretty smooth ride. officials say they're fi
