vance: right. the fundamental issue with american jobs and manufacturing right now is not that jobs have gone to mexico and china, but that they are automated. it is the mechanization that sort of reduced the manufacturing work base. there is a solution. it's to train people for the next level jobs, to train people for the 21st century workforce. and that is unfortunately not an easy solution, but the only solution that is going to work in the long-term. soledad: why do you think you were successful? you went into the military, then an ivy league school, and then out of middletown and to a b.c. job. vance: it's a lot of things in middletown that were supporting me. i write about in the book that i had a lot of good teachers who made sure i had access to opportunities. but most importantly, i had my grandparents, my mamaw and papaw as i call them in the book. they gave me that stable home that ensured that i had access to opportunities later down the line. and i think that leaves an important lesson
