but reporter jackson vander beckon found the eastern span may not last nearly as long as it's supposed to. >> reporter: corrosion has long beleaguered the new bay bridge leaning broken bolts, pitted cables and questions about his long-term survivability. now yet another corrosion peril is apparently at work on the span according to a new report that finds key welds on the giant steel pilings holding up the tower are under assault. corroding in some places 50% faster than caltrans estimated. just why is still a mystery but at the current rate, the steel piles that hold up is the tower could corrode away too soon to hold up the bridge for 150 years as designed. in fact, its life span could be cut by 50 years. >> it's enough that if you had projected that out 150 years, you would not have what we assumed. >> reporter: that's brian maroney, caltrans' chief engineer on the project. he says engineers allowed for the nearly 4-inch thick steel piles to get 3/4 inch of rust over the years but he says a recent underwater survey of the barnacle encrusted steel piles suggest something besides rust

here's investigatorive reporter jackson vander beck. >> that could be the cause of those fires that were so destructive. >> reporter: state senator jerry shil talking about reclosers, automated circuit breakers that can easily restore power, but also can spark wild fires if the lines are down on the ground. southern california utilities turned them off in fire season, but after the north bay wild fires, pg & e wouldn't say whether it turned off it's reclosers, but the company recently acknowledged it only has the ability to shut down a limited number. in a letter to jerry hill, pg & e turned off 38 reclosers, it has 6,900 in it's system, and it only shut down three reclosers in the hardest hit sonoma and napa areas. the company says the shutdowns are part of a pilot project that was limited to the worst of the area's considered high fire risk. senator hill says he surprised the company had such a limited ability given that a top official pledged back in 2015 to have shut down capability in all 132 identified high fire risk areas by the 2017 fire season. >> i think that's the troubling pa
