kcci's vanessa peng is live in ames. and bank please tell me -- vanessa: police tell me that the 100 and 200 blocks of welch avenue have the highest crime rates in town and that's why they want security cameras here. this brutal attack happened in february on a campustown sidewalk, ames police still don't know who did it. police say assaults like these happen several times a year in campustown, and their chances of finding the bad guys would increase significantly if they had video evidence. flex for us our goal is to help , serve justice with some of the victims of those crimes. vanessa: the ames police department recently went to the campustown action association, a community group, with a security camera proposal. they did it in 2012, but at that time, the city council didn't like the idea. now, there's been a turnover on the council. this time, the caa is seeking public input through an online survey. >> this is more of an issue of whether or not they would think it would provide a feeling of survelliance or safety.
