vanessa, you're around the employees, you're around the union workers.t's the feeling among them now that this is very real? >> reporter: yeah. historic day for the auto industry. and historic day for these workers. many of them who did not know if they were going to be on strike today. but at 12 midnight the word was given there will be a strike against the big three. we are here outside the ford michigan plant in wayne, michigan. and i want to bring you in to the conversation with austin johnson. he has been with ford for two years now. he's been here since midnight, since the first moment of the strike. you know what the union is asking for. you know why you are on strike tonight. do you support that? >> of course. i support everything the union is doing for me. and bill out here as long as i have to be. so. >> reporter: one of the big, key components is wages, cost of living. they want to make sure they preserve jobs in the ev transition. for you personally, what is the biggest issue you want to see resolved? >> probably the tier wages, the tier gaps

joining me now is retired prison governor vanessa . vanessa, thank you vanessa. got a completely different view to me on this. i don't know. but it seems blindingly obvious to me that we are have to build more are going to have to build more prisons, we're going prisons, otherwise we're going to end up with criminals walking free because we ain't got anywhere them . anywhere to put them. >> well, that is one view. absolutely >> yeah, you could look at it like that, but you have to think, well, where's all this money coming from to build all these lovely new prisons? you know, our, prison population know, our, our prison population has, like you said, expanded like fourfold since the early 1990s. and it's predicted to go over 100,000 by about 27, 2027, 2028. so clearly , we need to do 2028. so clearly, we need to do something now . where do you say something now. where do you say like it's not just wandsworth pfison like it's not just wandsworth prison that is overcrowded? wandsworth was actually in third in the table of most overcrowded prisons. leeds was first fo

cnn's vanessa yurkevich is at a ford plant in wayne, michigan. vanessa, what are we learning about the talks and whether anyone there on the picket line is optimistic? >> reporter: so ford and general motors back at the negotiating table with the uaw in detroit. stel yantis is getting back to the table on monday. we heard from sean feign on several morning shows. he said that he believes that the sides are still far apart and progress has been slow. he also said that he's rejecting offers of 20%, these are the historic offers that the big three say they're making rejecting those. he wanted to see 40% in wage increases over the next four years of this contract. i want to bring in sheryl webb williams. she's one of the 600 workers that was impacted in terms of ford laying 600 people off because of the ripple effect, because some union members here were told to go on strike. sheryl, i want to ask you, you know where negotiations stand. you know what the union is asking for and you know what the automakers have put on the table. what do you think is

vanessa yurkevich is all over this. vanessa?ing the picket lines in moments, and this is an escalation, but ford is not involved in this portion of the targeted strike. this is going to be essentially 5,625 additional folks heading out the the picket lines joining about 12,700 who are already on the picket lines. >> that is interesting. so it is a ton more places, but fewer workers who are already out. >> yes, yes. so these facilities have fewer folks working at them, but they are all of the parts plants in terms of gm and stellantis. so you are adding to the folks on the picket line, but not the huge escalation that we saw in the beginning in terms of how many folks were on the picket line. so we know that from shawn fain who spoke moments ago, they are in a good place with ford. they feel like there has been substantial progress, and that is why you are not seeing the additional plants from ford added to the targeted strike. but in terms of what ford is offering, they are reinstating cola, cost of living adjustments, taken awa

vanessa, we are standing by for this announcement. i know that you are, too, we will get back to you as soon as it happens. >>> up next, a uaw member, charles wade, who is at a ford assembly line in michigan. charles, can you tell us, what are you and your colleagues feeling tonight ahead of the possibility of this historic strike? >> anxious and ready to create a new standard for the american worker. >> you talk about a new standard, is this what this is about for you? >> it's about the quality of life, and >> charles, i'm sorry, uaw chief shawn fain is speaking right now. >> ford, general motors, and stellantis. the first time in our union's history, we had all three companies bargaining right here, at the solidarity house. leading into the final hours of our strike deadline. we've been working hard, trying to reach a deal for economic and social justice for our members. we have been firm. we are committed to winning an agreement with the big three that reflects the incredible sacrifice and contributions uaw members have made to the

i want to go the vanessa, who is in detroit. the and from the consumer perspective, we know that it could hurt the economy, and the economies of the people who work in those economies, and also for those going out the buy a car. >> yes, and i wanted to set the scene that the negotiations with the individual automakers and those are shifting to the uaw headquarters as the automakers and the unions are trying to work out a deal, but shawn feign is going for a strike approach which is calling on the local unions to strike for different days and different dates causing confusion, but some workers would be left working in the factories while others are on strike. and to your point, we know that a automakers this year have less inventory than they did in 2019. so it is a struggle if this strike prolongs for weeks if not months, and as you mentioned, a lot has been made about the impact of the economy, and one analyst is suggesting that the strike that lasts ten days against all three automakers would cost $9 billion to the u.s. econom

they could like just buy too many children like vanessa work before they are legally able. but while children have to be 14 to work in most jobs, federal laws allowed children as young as 12 to work on commercial farms and even younger if the farm is owned by their parents, we need to close those loopholes. we, we need to increase child labor fines because companies aren't feeling enough pain when they, when they violate the law. the u. s. department of labor reported child labor violations rose by 70 percent since 2018. in 2021. 24 children died from work injury is about half of them on farms. in the past year, lawmakers and at least 10 states loosened or proposed to ease the laws that govern children were economists say, a labor shortage is in part behind the drive to loosen laws. in some states with child labor has long been an issue in the us, especially in agriculture. brenda de ms. lopez now 22 members working illegally starting at age 5 in the blueberry fields and later hug farms alongside her parents who could not afford child care. she says after several years, she

vanessa hudson will take over as qantas' first female boss. 0ur international business correspondentns why mrjoyce has left early. his departure has been coming and it's been brought forward for very good reasons. if you look solely at the financial performance of qantas, then you would be justified in saying, "why on earth is mrjoyce leaving 7 " because as you say, they have just recorded a record annual profit. they steered themselves through the financial crisis. in financial terms, this is a robust company and throughout his tenure, mrjoyce focused on cutting costs. he focused on facing down unions, he focused on increasing profits, and he's done all of that. the problem is that a lot of this has come at the expense of qantas' reputation with its staff and with consumers. and over the past couple of years, these pressures have been starting to mount up. so in the wake of the covid pandemic, when qantas was returning to service, customer service was seen as being very poor. there were problems with baggage handling, there were problems with cancellations. all of that has added up.
