laura. >> vanessa yurkevich, thank you so much. i want to bring in a man who those a lot about what is going on in these negotiating rooms. he is former uaw president bob king. bob, thank you for being here. you saw shawn fain say they will strike all three at once. this is extraordinarily significant. a very big deal. take me inside the negotiating room. because you certainly have been there before. what is happening tonight? >> well, hopefully the parties are working hard to find an agreement that would be good enough to be ratified by the membership. you know, it is frustrating because in my view the companies that played a lot of brinkmanship bargaining rather than good faith bargaining. they delayed and delayed and delayed giving their proposals to the uaw. there were minimalist proposals to begin with. and they would never ever, ever get ratified by the membership. and that is something that you have to realize, these are member demands. these are not shawn's demands. he has been talking to the members and facebook live, so h

cnn's vanessa yurkevich is at a ford plant in wayne, michigan. vanessa, what are we learning about the talks and whether anyone there on the picket line is optimistic? >> reporter: so ford and general motors back at the negotiating table with the uaw in detroit. stel yantis is getting back to the table on monday. we heard from sean feign on several morning shows. he said that he believes that the sides are still far apart and progress has been slow. he also said that he's rejecting offers of 20%, these are the historic offers that the big three say they're making rejecting those. he wanted to see 40% in wage increases over the next four years of this contract. i want to bring in sheryl webb williams. she's one of the 600 workers that was impacted in terms of ford laying 600 people off because of the ripple effect, because some union members here were told to go on strike. sheryl, i want to ask you, you know where negotiations stand. you know what the union is asking for and you know what the automakers have put on the table. what do you think is a

vanessa yurkevich is all over this. vanessa?ing the picket lines in moments, and this is an escalation, but ford is not involved in this portion of the targeted strike. this is going to be essentially 5,625 additional folks heading out the the picket lines joining about 12,700 who are already on the picket lines. >> that is interesting. so it is a ton more places, but fewer workers who are already out. >> yes, yes. so these facilities have fewer folks working at them, but they are all of the parts plants in terms of gm and stellantis. so you are adding to the folks on the picket line, but not the huge escalation that we saw in the beginning in terms of how many folks were on the picket line. so we know that from shawn fain who spoke moments ago, they are in a good place with ford. they feel like there has been substantial progress, and that is why you are not seeing the additional plants from ford added to the targeted strike. but in terms of what ford is offering, they are reinstating cola, cost of living adjustments, taken awa

vanessa yurkevich is here. overnight, you had general motors saying they put a fifth big record offer on the table. where does that stand now? a deal has not yet been made. >> the clock is ticking. we expect to hear from the uaw president at 10:00 a.m., where he will announce more targeted strikes with a walkout of those striking members starting at noon. we know the big three have been negotiating with the kwunon over the past week, but we're not hearing about substantial progress, which is what he is looking for. we know stellantis and general motors put new deals on the table, but general motors is saying they don't feel like anything they put on the table is good enough to meet the demands, and that the uaw was going to go on strike re regardless. we also have seen that because there are 13,000 workers now on the picket lines, that's had a ripple effect on these companies. the companies have announced general motors, 2,000 idled workers, ford, 600 workers, ste lance fits, almost 70 workers laid off with 300

vanessa yurkevich is joining me now. you have been on the ground talking to sources and folks on the picket line right now. there's a new offer on the table. there's a deadline that everybody is looking at right now in a few hours. where do things stand? >> it's a new deadline. stellantis and general motors have offered two new deals to the union. we know all three auto makers met with the union at the main bargaining tables. however, we have not heard about a lot of progress. we even got a statement from general motors who said they believe no matter what they put on the table, that the union was going to strike any way. so not looking good, but at 10:00 a.m., we'll hear from the uaw president, who will announce possible targeted strikes at other plants around the country. it could be one or multiple auto makers. right now there are less than 13,000 members on strike, but there's an ars genal of 145,000 members he could send out at any time. we know there's a ripple effect from this. when you send out striking workers,

vanessa yurkevich, great reporting as always, thank you. poppy. >>> also this morning, los angeles county is offering a $250,000 reward for any information as to the shooting of sheriff's deputy ryan clinkunbroomer, he was shot and killed inside his patrol car on saturday. officials say they believe he was potentially targeted and ambushed. he was wearing his uniform, he was inside his patrol car, and the authorities believe this could have been intentional targeting of him. what do we know this morning? >> reporter: the sheriff saying it could be just because he was wearing his uniform, and now all available resources are being used to find the person or persons responsible for this. the sheriff vowing to find whoever did this. i want to sort of go over the time line of what happened here. you mentioned he was in a marked patrol car in uniform, on duty, he was just leaving the station, actually, on saturday night at around 6:00 p.m. in palmdale, 60 miles north of l.a., and he stopped at a red light. there is video obtained by cnn that show

vanessa yurkevich is live. you have been on top of this before the strike, the day of the strike.y four. what are we expecting? >> reporter: yeah, well, here this morning, we are seeing a group of uaw members on strike walking the picket line in a circle. they are out here at the direction of union leadership, but now what you have is folks on the picket line. then you have folks trying to come to work, but not able to get in to the facility. so you have some cars lined up. you have some trucks lined up and then you have cops, police officers who just actually moved a huge group of cars and trucks to another entrance to try to get them into the ford facility. we heard this may be happening in previous days, but we're seeing it play out live today. just to update you on negotiations, guys. we had ford at the main bargaining table on saturday. general motors yesterday, and stellantis will be at the main bargaining table today. negotiations are ongoing. that is certainly good news, but no deal in sight yet. the sides are pretty far apart, especially on those key wages. we also know t

cnn's vanessa yurkevich joins us now. i guess had is just going to continue on here.s stand? what can you tell us? >> reporter: yeah. so negotiations are always ongoing behind the scenes between the big three automakers and the union. but today general motors had their day at the main bargaining table with the union. those talks have concluded. we did not sort of hear from the union the same tone that we heard yesterday when the union met with ford at the bargaining table, saying they had reasonably productive negotiations. stellantis is scheduled to be up at the main table tomorrow. i am here with isaiah goddard. he is actually a third-generation ford worker. your grandfather started with the company. you know the lists of demands from the union, 40% increase in wages, four-day workweek, protection against ev transition. for you, what is the number one priority in this contract? >> i think it's important. i think i can speak for everybody here in the same way, the whole entire uaw as a whole. we want our fair share. we want fair wages. you know, we're sick of the cor

here is vanessa yurkevich. >> reporter: today you have over 18,000 uaw members on the picket line after facilities at gm and stellantis across 20 states, sending an additional 5,600 members out to the picket lines. and this is because president fain said that gm and stellantis needed a strong push to come with a better offer. however, if you notice, ford was not noted in those additional targeted strikes. president fain saying real progress was made with ford. here are some details. according to the union, ford's latest offer reinstated cost of living adjustments, which was something that many of these workers gave up in 2009. they're now offering more profit sharing. and temporary workers can now become full-time workers in 90 days. and there's additional job security, which essentially means that if a ford employee is laid off, they will receive two years of income and ben efits. notably missing is where things stand with wages. the union has been asking for 40% wage increase over four years. the last public offer from three companies was around 20%. ford and the uaw saying while they

vanessa yurkevich is in detroit. have been talking to the heads of the big lee ought makers. >> reporter: these deals come together in the last moments. but a target strike approach is unique and being executed by a unique leader. the head of the uaw, sean fain, talking about how this is going to play out. essentially, national union will reach out to local unions around the country and plan for certain days, certain times, a certain amount of people to go on strike. that, however, will leave other members working in the factories. and for the union, this is a way to confuse automakers, to keep them guessing, and as, as you mentioned, to conserve that strike fund if this strike plays out for a number of weeks or months. but this does come with risks because if you leave union members on the factory floors, the companies are not obligated to pay those employees. and so you also need to look at how much of a supply these automakers have in the pipeline. we know that these big three automakers do not have as much car su

big profit in recent year, the raises they demands will drive them out of business, cnn areas vanessa yurkevich is at a ford plant. vanessa, any new optimism? >> reporter: well, it's good news that ford and general motors are back at the negotiating table for the second day in a row after the targeted strike plan rolled out by the uaw. a spokesperson said they're back to the stable. we heard from john thamel on morning shows, he said there's not been a ton of progress in the negotiations. it's been slow. and he also said it's a no-go on the historic offers by the big three of 20% wage increases over the next four years. the unit wants 40%. i want to bring in rose salecky. she's been working the at ford for over 40 years. you know what's going on, four-day work week and production from the ev transmission. what's been the priority for you? >> to help the lower seniority people. >> reporter: tiered wages, folks coming in at lower >> i came in at $12.77 an hour. they're making just over $17 an hour 30 years later. there's no way that the economy with the cost of everything that they could handle,

cnn business and politics correspondent vanessa yurkevich is live outside the stellantis plant in warren. this is huge 48 hours, politically and optically. what's happening with the negotiations as all of this comes together, vanessa? >> reporter: yeah. it's going to be a historic day. president biden a matter of hours coming to wayne county, michigan, to take to the picket line. the first time we have seen a sitting president do that in what has already been a historic strike against the big three automakers by the union. today, i'm in front of the stellantis facility in warren, michigan. this is one of the 38 facilities that were authorized to strike just on friday. so these folks have been on the picket line for just a few days now. i want to bring in james snow to the conversation. he has been with the company for about 25 years. your thoughts on president biden coming to town today, taking to the picket line? >> i think it's good to have any exposure signed on what we're fighting for. i don't think it's the most important thing to be talking about right now. i think we have other mo

vanessa yurkevich joining us now. where do things stand now? i thought that was surprising. they thought ford was coming to the table in a serious way, the other two, no. >> and just in the first week, we saw an economic impact of $1.8 billion. those were just the three plants on strike. you had losses of wages totaling $250 million. you had losses to consumers and car dealerships of $470 billion. so that was just before these additional 38 targeted strikes across all of gm and stellantis' parts and distribution centers. ford, as you mentioned, not on that list, because shawn fain said that he felt like there was enough negotiating, there was a good deal so far -- or a good offer so far -- from ford. enough progress was made on their front. but what we need to look out for going forward here is what is the expanded impact on consumers? because essentially, when you take out parts and distribution across two big automakers, that has a ripple effect down to dealerships. dealerships provide service to everyday americans, who want to go in and get their cars fixed, and when you

let's talk about this now vanessa yurkevich back from the front lines of the picket lines to talk about what also has to do with anyone who is buying a car or working in the industry. let's talk first about the prices. what's behind the jump right now? >> that $6 a gallon in california, ouch, nobody wants to see those prices. today the national average is $3.88 up 20 cents from last year, but what is behind this is essentially russia and saudi arabia have cut output of supply and that means that oil prices go higher and then the ripple effect is that gas prices go higher. what we're hearing from analysts is that we are heading into the peak right now. so hopefully this will start to trail off. of course, when we head into fall we usually see falling gas prices, but that's not happening because of this limited supply coming out of these two key nations right now. >> and then this also is hitting at an important moment for the federal reserve. they have an important meeting today. what's expected to come out? >> they will be watching gas prices closely. we are expecting the federal reserv

vanessa yurkevich has the details here to piece together. >> yes, i was listening to shawn fain, andthat right now, i think that we can get there with all three at some point, but he did signal that stellantis and general motors needs some urging, but he said that ford did want to reinstall cost of living adjustments, and that is something they gave up, and he announced that 38 locations with gm and stellantis are now going on strike, and that saul of the parts and distributions center, which is a key component of the manufacturing process for general motors and stellantis. he said that will happen at 12:00 p.m. noon, so in a short time, we will see the workers head to the picket lines cross the lines at those plants. the one ford plant that is initially on strike, that ford plant is going to stay on strike, but no additional ford plants will be authorized to strike, and we should not see anymore ford workers head to the picket lines. >> this is the most optimistic that fain has been sounding to date, and even as they are expanding to stellantis and gm. and he was saying that they co

vanessa yurkevich is outside of the plant in fort wayne, michigan, and what are you hearing from thoseine, and what are the people looking at when it is coming to canada? >> yeah. >> reporter: yeah, people are encouraged that the negotiations are ongoing and ford and gm met with the organization over the weekend, and stellantis today, but the uaw president shawn fain says that the progress is low. i want to bring in darlene heffley and ask her, the negotiations are slow, but moving, and what do you think about that? >> well, it is a good effect that it is having on everyone, and everyone has a good spirit, and we are hopeful that things are going to come out good for both sides. ua with, and ford have had good relationships in the past, but there are some things that need to be caught up on, and one of those things is the tiers. we need to abolish the tiers and employees need to be making same rate and accelerate to the same rate and that is a hope for the future, and ale loing in with that would be pensions. they need to have a pension. that is something that -- their future. without

a source with the union telling my colleague vanessa yurkevich, quote, we had reasonably productive conversationith ford today, reasonably productive. of course, no deal, but any sign of progress you've got to take as extremely positive because in the last couple days we heard ford ceo say that if they were to give in to all of the union's demands, it would bankrupt the company. something that the head of the autoworkers union told me directly was a joke and a lie. and we know that the union said yesterday that they had sent counteroffers to each of the three, the big three automakers, ford, gm, and stellantis, and they were waiting for a response. we understand there were going to be negotiations with stellantis and gm today. we don't know what the progress is like on those. but as of yesterday, the head of the autoworkers union said that up until then 80% of the members' demands had not been met in any of the offers from the automakers. so we're waiting to see if there can be progress throughout the day. in the meantime, i want to show what we're seeing here in toledo, ohio. this outside a ste

arlette saenz and vanessa yurkevich is also there with more reporting. what are you learning? >> yes, we are learning that this could try to blunt any economic impacts that would occur, but what is unique, the white house does not have any authority to be a direct party to the negotiations. stla they have been in contact with both sides and speaking with the uwae chiefs, and he has a point person here at the white house gene spurling serving as a middleman to hear both sides, but there is limited ability in what the president can do when it is coming to the negotiations that are ongoing at the moment. what the white house has been trying to encourage is that these negotiators work around the clock the secure some type of agreement, and take a listen to one of of the president's top economic advisers just yesterday. >> the president believes that auto workers deserve a contract that sustains middle-class jobs. and the president is clearly one of the most pro union presidents that we have, and he is encouraging them to stay at the table 24/7 to get a win-win that keeps uaw worke

cnn's vanessa yurkevich has been following a busy day of developments.we know where ford gave and the other two did not, or are they staying mum on this? >> reporter: we certainly are learning some details but just an hour ago you have 5,600 uaw workers from general motors and stellantis hitting the picket lines joining the already 13,000 workers that have been on strike for about eight days. this is all -- all of general motors and stellantis' parts and distribution centers, this is across 38 facilities, across 20 states. now, we know from uaw president shawn fain that gm and stellantis need some pushing to try to get to a deal. ford, though, as you mentioned, jim, has been spared because there has been real progress there. ford's latest offer we have learned includes cost of living adjustments, something that workers gave up in 2009, ford now offering that again. you have additional profit sharing that the company is offering. you have a quicker transition from temporary workers to full-time workers, and you also have job security, which is essentially

>> vanessa yurkevich, think you so much. i want to bring in a man who knows a lot about what is going on in these negotiating rooms. he is that former uaw president, bob king and joins us now. bob, thank you for being here. you heard sean sane said that they are going to strike all of the big three, all at once. this is historic, it could be extraordinarily significant as you well know, this is a very big deal. take me inside the negotiating room because you certainly have been there before. what is happening tonight? >> well, hopefully the parties are working hard to find an agreement that would be good enough to be ratified by the membership. it is frustrating because, in my view, the country -- companies have made a lot of brinkmanship bargaining, rather than good faith bargaining. they delayed, delight, delayed before giving their proposals to the uaw. there are minimalist proposals to begin with and they would never, ever get ratified by the membership. people have to realize that these are member demands. these are sha

>> vanessa yurkevich, right next to the picket line, and very good to hear from someone who is there. hand to stop a government shutdown, but it is not clear if he has enough votes to stop this, and whether his own speakership is hanging in the balance. >>> this morning, a government shutdown is hanging in the balance here, and so, too, does the speakership of kevin mccarthy and he thought he had a funding deal last night, but he may not think the same thing this morning. lauren fox is joining us from washington. tell us what happened overnight as these negotiations were ongoing. >> well, sara, about as quickly as this deal came together between a couple of the members of the house freedom caucus and main street caucus, it fell apart. republican lawmakers met on a conference call last night around 8:00 p.m. where the details of the deal were unveiled, and it is including major funding cuts across the government with exceptions of the department of defense, homeland security, and veterans affairs, but the negotiated deal was not enough for some hardliners who now have more than a dozen

vanessa yurkevich is joining us live in detroit.n 24 hours, still time to reach a deal, but it is not looking good. president fain laying out the unique targeted strike approach, something we hadn't seen since the late 1990s. essentially the national union would call on select local unions at various plants at various times over various days and ask them only those unions to go out on strike leaving others working at the plants. part of this is to keep the company guessing and part of this is to conserve the strike fund for workers. but this could come at some risk because those workers that are still left working at the plants, they are not under a contract. and the companies do not have to pay those workers. also in terms of supply, if you just shut down a couple plants across the country, that could have an impact on the supply chain. one economist saying it is essentially like shutting down all production. we know the three automakers don't have as much inventory as they did in 2019. so i want you to listen to shawn fain and als

cnn's vanessa yurkevich has the details for us. what do you see inside these top line numbers?this is a good report, a little bit above expectations but still a comfortable number both on the jobs added and the unemployment rate ticking up to 3.8% but still in a comfortable range. when we dig in here is where jobs were added. gains in hospitality, gains in leisure and hospitality and gains in construction. these are areas that have added jobs in the month of august. now, losses, places we saw losses are in areas that maybe you would expect because of what you're hearing in the news a little bit. losses in trucking, 37,000 jobs lost, that is because yellow trucking corporation filed for bankruptcy, laid off 30,000 people, you're seeing that reflected right there. also we know that the writers, actors, have been on strike. that's the ripple effect right there. 17,000 in job losses. and analysts wanted to keep an eye on wages, wanted to make sure we didn't see robust acceleration in wages because that fuels inflation. analysts wanted to see it hold steady, we actually saw it cool

cnn business and politics correspondent vanessa yurkevich is with us on this important story.s reveal? >> this is a robust report, a good report we're seeing jobs added, but at the historic rate that we had seen pre-pandemic. you're seeing jobs added across various sectors, but also if you look at june and july there, those numbers were actually revised down. 100,000 fewer jobs were actually added in those two months than previously expected, so a softening over those two months. the unemployment rate, though, ticking up to 3.8% and that is because you have greater labor force participation. people in the market right now looking for a job. here are the industries that added the most amount of jobs in the month of august, you have gains in health care, you have gains in leisure and hospitality and in construction. the sectors that saw declines are sectors that have been in the news recently, in trucking, you saw a loss of 37,000 jobs, that's because a trucking company, yellow trucking here in the u.s. went bankrupt out of business, that was a loss of 30,000 jobs for those empl

vanessa yurkevich is live with the ceo of general motors, mary barra. >> reporter: here at gm headquarters strike today. thank you so much for being here. gm and the union could not come to an agreement before the midnight deadline. why is that? >> well, i think that's a question you probably need to ask the uaw because we have a very compelling offer on the table. i am very frustrated because i think we had an offer that resonates with the people. it's an historic offer. gross wage increases of 20% that compound to 21%, maintaining world class health care. there are several aspects as well. i think one thing that's most important is job security. and we are an incredibly exciting time in this industry right now as we transform from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles. general motors has a pipeline coming. when we look at that and how this could delay that, it's at a critical juncture. so we have a deal i think is very, very important. that proposal sits at the table. the team is ready to be at the table. they are waiting. we need the uaw leadership to get these issues

vanessa yurkevich, thank you very much. brianna? when it comes to the federal government's internal economy, things are unsettled, and a critical dead lline is looming just ahead. the white house is pushing congress to pass a short-term spending bill to avoid a shutdown. the key players hash out a long list of disagreements. the current funding for the government is set to expire at the end of this month. cnn's kayla tauche is live for us at the white house. >> brianna, president biden has called the possibility of a shutdown a serious, serious problem and said he hopes there's more maturity on capitol hill than to allow a shutdown to happen. but just this week, the white house threw its weight behind a short-term funding deal that congressional leaders have been saying for weeks is the best option to keep the government open through the fall and to avert a shutdown. a spokesperson for the office of management and budget telling cnn it is clear that a short-term continuing resolution, a so-called cr, will be needed next month. the b

vanes vanessa yurkevich is live for us. where do things stand? >> reporter: we got word that general motors has submitted a new offer to the uaw, the previous proposal was an 18% pay increase over four years so one would assume this would be more than that, and just to update folks on where ford and stellantis stand, ford offered 20% over four years. on tuesday ford saying they're still waiting for a counter off from the uaw and stellantis submitted an offer of 17 1/2 per sent but that is not close to the 40% in wage increases that the union has been asking for since the very beginning. sean fain, the president of the uaw spoke last night about where he feels they ever in the state of notegotiations. i want you to listen to him and then to the ceo of ford, jim farley on how he feels negotiations are going. >> they nickel and dime our members every day. they price gouge the american consumer and squeeze the u.s. taxpayer for every dime they can get. the big three can afford to immediately give us our fair share. >> made our first offer almost two
