stuart varney looking at the numbers deeper. >> reporter: it's a solid report.ot a strong recovery like previous recoveries. but 295,000 jobs is a solid number. the real unemployment rate went down to 11%. you and i do this every month. dig beneath the headlines and you have a slightly different picture. the unemployment rate went down to 5.5%. why did that happen? because 178,000 people dropped out of the workforce. it equals a lower unemployment rate. that's the labor participation rate. no change there. so millions of people are still not in the workforce. one last one for you bill. we are not earning enough to keep pails with inflation. earnings -- average hourly earnings went up 2%. that's roughly what we suffered from with inflation. here is the conclusion, bill. it's still not at robust recovery which will rescue middle america. the 295,000 jobs is solid. bill: labor participation rate. 62.8%. why is that number not moving? >> reporter: large numbers of people think there is not enough opportunity in this economy to go back into the labor force. that's wh

bill: stuart varney on the financial impact of the decision. shannon, what else at heart -- at the heart of today's case? >> reporter: it's about the phrase that says the subsidies the tax credits that those only extend into state set-up exchanges. still the majority of states are not settings up their own exchanges. so the argument is, is that going to affect whether the subsidies get extended? the irs says we extend them anyway. >> these are only authorized through an exchange set up by the states. congress didn't read the law before they passed it. they passed it hastily and now they are having buyer's remorse. >> reporter: we haded the sound come up from jonathan gruber he said that's a mistake. that's what he said. bill: republicans have a backup plan in congress. what happens on the overall framework of obamacare if the subsidies are struck down by the court? >> reporter: critics of this legal maneuver said you have to think of the real people who will be impacted. but even those folks who support obamacare say they acknowledge it will be

stuart varney is here now with more. so for all the people who signed up for obamacare.t was correctly computed. >> reporter: the shocks keep coming with obamacare. it am nasty shock especially if you rely on the tax refund you think you are going get. a study of all people who received a subsidy for obamacare last year found a lot of the information supplied on the part of those people getting the subsidy was incorrect. result? almost half of the people who got a subsidy will have to pay some of that subsidy back in the form after lower tax refund. martha: they supplied the information and it was incorrect. >> i guess you could say that and you could say the whole process is so complex is who on can understand it and get it absolutely right. the average cut in the refund is $794. that means something to people who rely on that refund. some people will get more money back. those are the people who got a smaller subsidy than they were entitled to. but the big deal is a lot of people relying on that refund will not get what they thought they were going to get back. martha:
