professor varon: by no means. professor gallagher: and many consider link and abolitionist and that is -- professor varon: let's talk about -- we noted that lee's army was the last confederate army to can -- to surrender. there was a controversial surrender of joe johnson's army to sherman. why has become so controversial? professor gallagher: because sherman extended terms that were breathtakingly broad, but basically set the pattern for what reconstruction would be. itthere was a political dimension as well as a military dimension to them, and he was reined in by grants, first of all, who said no, you can extend my terms. what were the terms i extended at appomattox? those are the terms, not the ones that sherman aced ended to joseph johnson down itat davis. davis told joseph johnston to let the infantry go but sort of take your cavalry and maintain the resistance, and sherman ignored him and followed through, but it is sherman going way off. professor varon: he encroached into the political round, their brief w

professor varon: good.'s talk about his counterparts, jefferson davis and the state of the confederacy. gary, what does davis expect for the spring? professor gallagher: davis is obviously in a very different position than abraham lincoln it is interesting to see the things he wrote at this stage of the war because in some ways he seems to be a little out of touch from what was actually unfolding. robert e. lee was deeply pessimistic long before the spring of 1865, but davis is a resolute confederate nationalist and determined, and he seems to cling to the hope that somehow the confederacy can emerge from this incredible bloodletting as a republic. it is kind of hard to really get into his mind at that point because he was off to one very far end of the spectrum in that regard in terms of the confederacy. professor varon: go ahead, harold. mr. holzer: i am always joined drawn back to what lincoln thought surely what happened to jefferson davis. professor gallagher: get away! mr. holzer: get away. i'm not su

prof varon: how about this question. if wife's excepted black involvement, how did they square that with their willingness to support jim crow? if people know they were active in the jr -- ga are? prof. gannon: it was politically powerful. they saw their job is getting pensions to help veterans. they had been political in the first few years of their life. they actually disappeared for a few years. people credited it to that. they were careful to stay out of partisanship. their view was their organization was fraternity, charity, loyalty. that it was within their purview of what they would do. if they got involved with politics, they virtually disappeared in the 1870's. did they occasionally fight? yes, occasionally. what they would stand up to his violence and lynching. they would rarely take it. that was outside of their organization. that didn't have anything -- that wasn't about the ga are. i found many prominent union veterans had been involved, did try to fight it outside. justice harlan who made the great dissent

varon: let's talk about frederick douglass. i think douglass is the person we hold up who has done the most to defend and defined the emancipationist memory of the war. what is his role n.y.c. say there was a right side -- why does he say there was a right side that we ought not to forget someone was on the moral high ground and we are forgetting it. let's talk about that. prof. brundage: i will take an initial step. i think there are two sides. we should understand that douglass was one of the great orators of the 19th century steeped in oratory of the 19th century and one of the great vehicles for the oratory in the 19th century was to scold your audience and tell them all the things they did not do right. if they started doing things right, they could save themselves in the future would be wonderful. and i'm not trying to in any way diminish the magnitude of what douglass did. that was just the style of speech that he was particularly prone to give. he wanted to scold his audiences. you are not remembering hard enough. i thi

prof varon: for african-american soldiers allowed to be buried in the cemeteries? prof varon: yes. for the most part. one of the remarkable things is they are the first publicly funded integrated cemeteries. the part that is not always there is a soldiers were buried in separate sections. segregated sections. in mississippi they are buried with the unknown. there's a quarter of the ceremony -- cemetery they are buried with the unknown. prof varon: all right. this could have followed our american west question. did secession expedite the settlement of the american west? >> the answer is yes. all you have to do is look at a map on when were admitted into the union in the west after the war. the almost all were. it was a stunning development. the planes and prairie states had roughly one million people. by 1890, 11 million. streams from europe, and the country itself, to get manage of the homestead act. to get manage of the railroads to bring them there, the transcontinental railroad. it was an explosion of settlement, and with the states the territories becoming states, they were add

varon: let's talk about freedom and how it was to be defined. there were whites who were able to accept emancipation as a military necessity, but had a narrow definition of emancipation. nothing but the freedom to work for wages. nothing beyond that. not full civil rights and full political rights. african-americans, the three people -- the freed people had a more expansive idea of their citizenship rights. what does that citizenship rights term connote? prof. glymph: the whole debate over citizenship points that until this moment in history, we had no national definition of citizenship. and what enslaved people wanted, formerly slaves wanted was not so different from what all americans want. the right to move, mobility, the right to one's children, the right to marry and have that marriage sanctified by the church and by law. the right to vote, for men. i think most fundamental to all the civil rights is the right to possess or own one's own body and labor power. i can sell my labor to you, just as any northern immigrant can. but you can't buy
