vaughn hillyard is in jacksonville covering this for us. vaughn, good to see you. i've got to say these numbers came through last night and i was floored hearing that this was the highest number that state had seen since the beginning of this pandemic. shocking. how are folks feeling about that right now? >> reporter: yasmin, the vaccine has been available to folks here for now three or four months. this is the fourth surge. you'd think that after a certain period of time, after the number of waves that the state has lived through that at some point it would become more apparent that the stress that this puts onto hospitals is very, very difficult. you're talking about icu wards that are being built literally today. i was just talking with a nurse actually in nearby baton rouge, louisiana. they were essentially doubling their icu capacity because they have run out of room in their icus for covid patients. when we talk about florida specifically, more than 20,000 new cases just yesterday. but it goes beyond florida here at this point. any which way you look at the n

-- vaughn hillyard. what are we hearing from the white house today about the search in cases? >> there is no question, alex, the vaccination push in the united states has lost steam. we are still short of that 70% goal that the president hoped america would reach by the 4th of july. a hundred million americans according to dr. fauci who are eligible for the vaccine and have not gotten vaccinated. that is why we are seeing the biden white house trying to revive the push to get as many people vaccinated as possible through the new incentives, through requirements for federal workers to either get vaccinated or undergo strict testing as well as try to limit the spread of the delta variant by re-imposing these mask recommendations to try to prevent healthy people who might have already been vaccinated contract the covid virus through a breakthrough case from passing it on to other people who are unvaccinated and could face even more serious case of the covid-19 virus. however, we are also hearing from dr. fa

>> vaughn hillyard for us. thank you.tor, i want to start with sort of a when are we going to start to hit our peak. i saw that missouri was the canary in a coal mine, they were first. they're finally looks like their curve is starting to round out. what does that tell you, we're looking end of september, early october at best here? >> i think that, chuck, you and i talked about because we have geographically disparate country, you may see texas and florida increase cases, they're still vertical. cases are still going up. two other things may change in fall, that's why it is unknown for me. one, our kids will go to school, more kids will go to school, colleges will start. how will that impact transmission in areas with higher transmission rate. and the other, colder weather. this is a respiratory illness more transmissible during colder weather. we don't know how the two elements will impact how long we see that. for those states that had earlier peaks, there's a decline in cases in those areas. >> so we're getting word t

vaughn, let me start with you in florida. you're outside of a hospital that's well past illustrates earlier record for covid hospitalizations. talk about the landscape in florida. you also have the governor coming out and saying no mask mandates. i ban basically any requirements for masking in places like schools, et cetera. how much worse are officials bracing for it to get there? >> reporter: it's not getting better any time here soon. you're looking at more than 40% of florida adults are still not fully vaccinated and it's those individuals, those unvaccinated individuals that make up the population inside of these hospitals. we're told across the state of florida that 96% of the patients, the covid patients in hospitals are unvaccinated individuals. you can just look at that rate of hospitalization, jump up over the course of this weekend. now more than 10,000 breaking last summer's hospitalization record here. i want to let everybody listen to u.s. health jacksonville er dr. elizabeth davossier. we don't have access. fol

. >> what are rescue efforts looking like from your vantage point, vaughn? reporter: we're talking about expansive areas of lapd. our photo journalist, you can see the video he took late yesterday afternoon. when you are looking down in the grand isle part, you will see part of the stretch south of new orleans there, and it's still so difficult for these search and rescue teams to access. you see that coast guard flight trying to their best to survey the damage and see what may still exist there on those parts of the land south of new orleans. there's the 20-mile stretch of highway that is essentially underwater or that is buckled in, and it's made it inaccessible by vehicle, and that's where the coast guard is deployed, as well as 24 shallow water response units into that area to help with the search effort, again, deploying here from mobile, alabama. that's where you are looking at in those areas there where folks still had trouble gaining access to that, and i know we will be waiting for the louisiana governor for his update, because we have four confirme

vaughn, i have got to start with you. florida, over the winter was patting itself on the back, the state that figured this whole thing out. over the weekend, florida broke its own record for new cases. and then it broke its own record for hospitalizations. it's somewhat surprising. florida has such a high senior citizen proposition, they were among the first to be eligible, so who is it that's getting so sick? >> i think the number one demographic that we have to look at here and repeat over and over and over and when we're comparing those who are in the hospital. 96 of them here in florida are the unvaccinated. 96% of these folks who are in these florida hospitals are unvaccinated. now, when we're looking at the age demographics, it's not old folks. the average age today, this monday, it's 42 years old. we here in florida have broken the previous record of hospitalizations from last summer. and i think it's important to note that last summer, when we got to in excess of 10,000 cases, it took two months to get from 2,000
